South Australia weekly wrap: Draft hopefuls make most of senior debuts

WITH Round 5 of the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) completed, we review the performances of the potential draft prospects for 2018 across all levels. It should be noted that due to the ANZAC Day games held on Wednesday, it was not a full round of matches.

League:

Jackson Hately continued his fine midfield form at league level in Centrals’ win over Glenelg, with 20 disposals including seven tackles and being named in the best players, demonstrating his suitability at this level. Connor Rozee looked comfortable in his league debut for North in their win over the Eagles, playing in the forward line with 11 disposals, including two score assists and two goals – one of which sparked the Roosters in the last quarter. For the Eagles, Jack Lukosius had 15 disposals and clunked eights marks, playing mainly as a hit up forward.

Reserves:

Best on ground in Sturt’s win over Norwood, midfield bull Tom Lewis had 31 disposals (18 contested) and seven clearances with eight inside 50s. Teammate Mihail Lochwiak was classy again with 15 disposals and one goal. Norwood midfielder Luke Valente’s reserves debut included 22 disposals and seven marks. In Woodville-West Torrens’ 10-point win over North, Kai Pudney was busy with 17 disposals and North’s Frankie Szekely was lively in the forward line with 10 disposals. Jez McLennan was again solid for Centrals with 15 disposals including six marks and six tackles in their win over Glenelg.

U18s:

Glenelg defeated Centrals by eight points, with defender Luke Viska best, and Seb Schrieber had 28 disposals including nine marks.  For Centrals, Aaron Nietschke was again in the best with 23 disposals, 11 marks and one goal, with Malachai Ahmatt-Lovett having 19 disposals including seven marks, six tackles and six inside 50s.

South defeated Sturt by 17 points with Hayden Sampson best afield with 29 disposals and one goal.  For Sturt, underager Jed McEntee was dominant with 25 disposals including six marks and seven tackles. Casey Voss was also strong with 23 disposals, along with 13 marks.

In the Eagles’ 12-point win over the Roosters, centre-half forward Grady Armfield was best with his 17 disposals, six marks, nine inside 50s and one goal. Centre half-back Ryan Bruce was also in the best with his 14 disposals and five tackles. For the Roosters, midfielder Boyd Woodcock was again outstanding with his 29 disposals, nine marks and four goals alongside Mason Neagle, who had 34 disposals, two goals and 11 marks.

Norwood smashed West Adelaide by 84 points, with Jacob Kennerley best for Norwood with 26 disposals, 11 marks, five tackles and two goals. Cam Taheny was outstanding up forward with 24 disposals (23 of which were kicks) 12 marks and had 11 shots at goal to kick eight. Dylan Stephens was also good with 29 disposals including 10 marks and eight inside 50s. For West, Jacob Earl was best with 17 disposals, working both ends of the ground.
