Scouting notes: WAFL Colts – Claremont vs. Subiaco
IN round 17 of the WAFL Colts competition, Subiaco defeated Claremont by 13 points at Claremont Oval on Saturday morning. Lenny Fogliani was there to capture the action.
Below were the best players in the game.
CLAREMONT
#9 JACK MONAGHAN
Arguably the best player for Claremont, Monaghan showcased why the Tigers are rapt with his development. He racked up 21 possessions, took six marks, recorded four inside 50s, laid two tackles and kicked a goal in a magnificent performance. His skill and running capacity make him a damaging midfielder.
#10 ISAAC BARTON
The crafty small forward was a livewire inside 50 for Claremont, with his speed, skill execution and goal awareness all on display. He finished with 19 possessions, four marks, four inside 50s, and a goal in a lively performance.
#15 OLIVER HENDERSON
The 19-year-old was his busy self in the midfield for the Tigers with 16 possessions, three tackles, two marks and two inside 50s. With such performances, expect Henderson to progress to Claremont’s senior teams.
#17 MAX GRANT
Situated in defence, Grant was exceptional for the Tigers, often thwarting the Lions offence. He collected 16 possessions, laid six tackles, and recorded three inside 50s to be one of the better Claremont players. His balance between defence and offence makes him an outstanding half-back flanker.
#19 JACK COOLEY
Although only draft eligible in 2019, Cooley’s stocks rose with his performance against the Lions. He was Claremont’s leading possession-winner with 22 disposals, and also finished with five marks, and three inside 50s. His upside should have recruiters monitoring him closely.
#25 NATHAN PEARCE
The West Coast junior continued his fine season with a solid display against Subiaco. He accumulated 14 possessions, laid a team-high seven tackles, took two marks and recorded two inside 50s in a fantastic display.
SUBIACO
#3 TRISTAN HOBLEY
The 2016 WA U16s State Academy representative was superb for the Lions, often being the link-up player between midfield and attack. His elite vision, combined with his crisp disposal made the Subiaco forwards come into the game a lot easier. Hobley finished with a game-high 34 possessions, a game-high six inside 50s, five marks and five tackles.
#9 NATHAN FRENCH
Against the Tigers, French was excellent on the half-forward flank. He accumulated 19 possessions, took seven marks, recorded five inside 50s, laid two tackles and kicked a goal in a powerful display. His ferociousness at the man and the ball is scary and his vision and skill to set up his team-mates for goal opportunities is outstanding.
#10 JACK MAYO
The current leader for the WAFL Colts Leading Goalkicker Award tightened his grip in the lead with another commanding performance. Against Claremont, Mayo booted four goals from 15 possessions, as well as five marks, three tackles and two inside 50s.His smarts inside 50 make him a dangerous player up forward.
#13 LIAM HICKMOTT
The reigning Subiaco Colts’ Best & Fairest winner was arguably best afield with yet another tough performance. He accumulated 28 possessions, laid a game-high nine tackles, recorded three inside 50s, took two marks and kicked a goal in yet another outstanding performance. His tough inside work, along with his ability to spread from the congestion makes him an excellent midfield prospect.
#15 WIL HICKMOTT
The younger son of former Carlton and Geelong player Adrian Hickmott, Wil was excellent again for the Lions, raising his draft stocks. He collected 23 possessions, laid five tackles, recorded three inside 50s, and took two marks in a polished display.
#17 KYLE STAINSBY
The Carine junior demonstrated why he is one of the best attacking half-back flankers in the WAFL Colts competition. He finished with 19 possessions, six marks, four tackles and three inside 50s in a dazzling display. His run and carry, as well as his long kicking is similar to how Richmond star Jayden Short plays.
#25 XAVIER PEACOCK
Arguably the best ruckman on the ground, Peacock showcased why he is one of the most sought after key position players in this year’s draft. Along with Mach Deng (22 hit-outs), Peacock provided a presence in the centre ball-ups and around the ground, often getting the ball down to his midfielders. He finished with 10 possessions, 20 hit-outs, four marks, three tackles and three inside 50s.
