Scoreboard Sweep 24/02: AFLW, SANFLW
IN this weekend’s Scoreboard Sweep, we take a look at how Round 4 in the AFL Women’s went down, as well as Round 2 in the SANFL Women’s League.
AFLW results:
Geelong 2.7 (19) defeated Carlton 1.8 (14)
Western Bulldogs 2.5 (17) defeated by Brisbane 7.7 (49)
Adelaide 9.11 (65) defeated Fremantle 3.5 (23)
Collingwood 4.3 (27) defeated by GWS GIANTS 5.6 (36)
Melbourne 5.4 (34) defeated by North Melbourne 6.2 (38)
Geelong survived a low-scoring thriller against Carlton to remain undefeated at home and on top of Conference B to start the round. On Saturday night, Brisbane dominated the Western Bulldogs to become the first Conference B side to topple a Conference A opponent, leaving the Bulldogs on the bottom of their conference and with a poor percentage after two consecutive heavy losses. Adelaide put in the performance of the round, smashing previously undefeated Fremantle by seven goals in an ominous sign to the rest of the competition. GWS GIANTS kept their finals chances alive with a win against the winless Colligwood. There were some nervous moments late for the GIANTS, but they held on for a nine-point win. In the final game of the round, North Melbourne survived a thriller against Melbourne in a see-sawing contest to remain the only team undefeated in the competition.
In a game with high-profile forwards, it was Phoebe McWilliams who dominated the air with six marks from 10 disposals and a goal to provide a focal target up forward for the Blues. Brisbane had six individual goal kickers in the Lions’ big win, as Ally Anderson racked up yet another 20 touches, while debutant, Jacqui Yorston had the fourth highest AFL Fantasy points (67) after nine tackles to go with her eight disposals. Inaugural League Best and Fairest winner, Erin Phillips had another day out with 25 disposals, four marks and 2.3 in a dominant performance up forward against the Dockers, while Kiara Bowers and Dana Hooker were once again the Dockers’ best. Despite booting four of the last five goals of the game, Collingwood fell short against the GIANTS as Alicia Eva and Jaimee Lambert were their respective team’s bests with 21 touches each. Emma King starred for the Roos in their win with three majors in the momentum-swinging contest, while Jess Duffin was impressive in the back half. Karen Paxman and Lily Mithen were impressive for the Dees.
SANFLW results:
North Adelaide 6.6 (42) defeated Sturt 5.5 (35)
West Adelaide 7.3 (45) defeated Woodville-West Torrens 6.6 (42)
Central District 3.2 (20) defeated by Glenelg 5.7 (37)
Norwood 5.3 (33) defeated South Adelaide 3.3 (21)
Last year’s wooden spooners, Glenelg finished Round 2 top of the SANFL Women’s table after a 17-point win over Central District. The Tigers handed the Bulldogs another loss, with fellow new side, Woodville-West Torrens also suffering a second defeat, but in a narrow three-point loss at the hands of West Adelaide. Last year’s grand finalists, Norwood was the other side to record a second consecutive win, knocking off reigning premiers South Adelaide – the first time the Redlegs had defeated the Panthers. In the other game, North Adelaide won the battle of the Round 1 losers with a seven-point victory over Sturt.
West Adelaide’s Chelsea Biddell shot to the top of the leading goal kickers with six majors, one more than North Adelaide’s Kelly Bartrop. Sarah Perkins did all she could for the Eagles in the narrow loss, booting 3.4 as inaccuracy proved costly. Norwood’s Najwah Allen was a hero in front of goal last week, this week she recorded an equal-high 24 disposals for the round, as did Woodville-West Torrens’ Stephanie Walker and Sturt’s Georgia Bevan.
