Covid chaos keeps AFLW on its toes

THE AFL’s Health and Safety Protocols have ensure that there have been AFL Women’s fixture changes for the third weekend in a row, but there are still some enthralling matches coming our way this weekend. This includes two matches between the four remaining undefeated sides this season.

Collingwood vs Fremantle
Tonight at 5:40pm AEDT
Victoria Park

The first battle of the undefeated takes place tonight, with both sides coming off impressive wins last week against Geelong and Richmond respectively.

Last time these two met was back in 2020, and it was the Dockers who got over the line in a close one.

This clash sees one of the most versatile teams in attack versus one of the best backlines in the league. Fremantle had nine different goal kickers last week, so Collingwood’s backline is certainly going to have its hands full tonight.

GWS vs Western Bulldogs
Friday at 5:10pm AEDT
Henson Park

There are a lot of question marks surrounding this match.

GWS are coming off a humiliating and what would have been very frustrating loss to North, while due to Covid the Bulldogs haven’t played since their round one loss to the Dees.

GWS last week had a lot of trouble getting it out of their defensive 50, so that is an weakness the Bulldogs can exploit if they are able to set up a similar zone to what North deployed last weekend.

The question for the Bulldogs will certainly be around match fitness. They are coming into the match off a 19-day break, which is an eternity in football these days and rather unprecedented. The week off was no issue for Brisbane on Tuesday night, but the Bulldogs’ situation is very different.

Adelaide vs Melbourne
Saturday at 2:40pm ACDT
Norwood Oval

The second of the all-undefeated clashes for the weekend sees the Dees travel to face the Crows at Norwood Oval.

This match will certainly be no easy task for the Dees. It is their first interstate trip for the season, and the match is at Adelaide’s fortress of Norwood Oval.

But if this season has taught us nothing else about the Dees, it is that they are certainly more then capable of handling whatever is thrown at them, so they will certainly go into the match with that confidence.

They will also have the pain of the 2021 Preliminary Final loss burning in the back of their minds, which was the last time these two sides met.

It is not all smooth sailing for the Crows though, who are sweating on the fitness of stars Anne Hatchard and Chelsea Randall.

Despite this, Adelaide has shown this season it is again one of the contenders for a reason and will go into the match as likely favourite.

Brisbane vs Geelong
Saturday ay 4:10pm AEST
Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex

Brisbane returns to its actual home for the first time this season, off the back of a comprehensive win against the Blues on Tuesday night.

The Cats, on the other hand, took it up to the Magpies but ultimately couldn’t get the chocolates.

This is certainly going to be one hell of a challenge for the Cats. Scoring still remains an issue for them despite their improvement in other areas, while Brisbane have a potent forward line that is only getting stronger with the addition of Zimmorlei Farquharson.

The Cats need to find more avenues to goal, and fast.

Carlton vs North Melbourne
Sunday at 3:10pm AEDT
Ikon Park

This one is certainly going to be quite the challenge for Carlton.

They are yet to play much consistent footy this season, and they come up against a very polished North side who demolished GWS last week.

Carlton also need to watch out for North’s zone defence, which proved particularly effective against GWS last week. One area to fault North’s game though would be their goalkicking accuracy.

They kicked 12 behinds last week, and their accuracy has been getting worse and worse since Round 1.

Gold Coast vs Richmond
Sunday at 4:10pm AEST
Metricon Stadium

This is another game with a lot of question marks surrounding it.

It involves two teams with a sole win so far this season, but both in very different circumstances.

Gold Coast earned its first win in over a year against West Coast two weeks ago, but then ended up with a Covid imposed bye last weekend. The question will be whether that winning momentum from round two remains, and if the Suns can ride it to another win. Also, how has the week off affected them?

Richmond, on the other hand, may also only have one win to its name, but has been competitive for a large percentage of the game in most of its other matches, particularly against some quality opposition. How will the Tigers go against much easier opposition?

Collingwood vs West Coast
Tuesday at 5:10pm AEDT
Victoria Park

Collingwood will be coming off a four day break into this clash, while West Coast was supposed to be playing on Friday night but the match ended up postponed due to a Covid outbreak within the West Coast camp.

Whether West Coast is able to get enough numbers in time remains to be seen, but the Eagles are certainly going to have a lot on their plates contending with a talented side in Collingwood, especially on the Magpies’ home deck.

Western Bulldogs vs Fremantle
Tuesday at 7:10pm
Whitten Oval

The second of a double header of matches brought forward due to the WA border situation sees the Bulldogs take on Fremantle.

Both teams will be coming off short breaks after having played earlier in the round, so fitness and the number of injuries in each camp will be telling factors in this match.

That being said, Fremantle has shown to be a much stronger side than the Bulldogs, so the Dogs will have a lot on their plate to manage if they are to get the win.
