Coyne levels up with kick of confidence

CONFIDENCE is often key, and it is one thing which Sandringham Dragons midfielder Keely Coyne has grown in over the last year. The 17-year-old came seemingly out of nowhere to impress as a bottom-ager in 2021, managing seven NAB League outings and earning Vic Metro Under 17s selection.

Having only started out in football in 2017, Coyne credits her rise to a boost in confidence as she enters and enjoys her third season within the elite talent pathway. Rubbing shoulders with some of Victoria’s top talent in the metro hub also helps.

“I did put a bit of work in (during lockdowns) but I think the improvement came from my confidence growing as I started playing,” Coyne said. “I debuted last season and just got more familiar with the environment and everything so my confidence improved.

“The (Vic Metro) camps and training have been really good. You’re playing with a lot better skill level so everyone just lifts to that next level, the intensity is a lot better.

“Just improving off each other and learning off each other has been really good… all the girls are so good so it was such a big opportunity.”

Looking towards the recently commenced 2022 season, Coyne has already ticked off her short-term goal of playing in Round 1, and is clear on where her on-field acumen stands. The end goal? Getting drafted, of course.

“Long-term hopefully we win a few more games this year with the girls,” she said. “I think I want to play more in midfield and a bit more inside.

“I would say my kicks are pretty good and I think I’ve got good awareness, so just spotting people and my quick hands… I want to get stronger and be able to compete in contests a bit more.”

After a nail-biting win on the road against the Tasmania Devils last week, Coyne and her fellow Dragons are currently readying to battle regional rival Oakleigh Chargers back at home on Sunday afternoon.

The leadership group member had 18 disposals and four marks in Round 1, partnering up with the likes of Sofia Hurley and Ella Sciberras in the absence of Bridie Hipwell. A big season lies ahead for the Dragons’ engine room operators.
