VFLW Round 10 preview: Season crescendo approaches in final month
THERE is just over a month left in this year’s VFL Women’s season, and this weekend’s menu of matches presents fixtures with a wide variety of potential results. We preview the action from all six games in Round 10.
Darebin vs Collingwood
Saturday at 11am
Preston City Oval
This could be one of the matches of the round, and has the potential to be a season defining fixture for both sides.
Both teams were ultimately blown out of the water by their opponents last week, so will be keen to avoid that this week.
This is also realistically a must win match for both sides. The currently sit in sixth and seventh respectively, and while still in the finals contention, they really cannot drop too many matches if they want to keep up with the teams above them.
Port Melbourne vs Geelong
Saturday at 1:10pm
ETU Stadium
Both of these sides are coming off bad losses last weekend, so will be keen to make amends this time out.
There is a lot riding on this result for both sides.
For Port, while they are not completely out of the finals race yet, only a couple more losses would just about wipe out any last hope they had.
For Geelong, they currently sit in fifth, but cannot afford to rest on their laurels just yet. They are only a couple of losses off tumbling out of the top six.
Western Bulldogs vs Essendon
Saturday at 2pm
Whitten Oval
While some of the other matches on Saturday may be season defining classics, this one falls at the other end of the scale.
Essendon is in scintillating form at the moment, and looks a side full of confidence which will prove very hard to beat.
The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are languishing dead last on the ladder and have been beaten in all nine outings thus far.
There are so many dangerous players in that Essendon side that the Bulldogs will have to keep quiet in order to have any hope of causing the upset of the season, which with the way they are going at the moment is hard to see coming to fruition.
Southern Saints vs Williamstown
Sunday at 9:45am
Trevor Barker Oval
This one is going to be a windy clash, but that will not phase the Seagulls as they are used to those kinds of conditions at their own home ground.
This one probably has more riding on it for the Saints than it does the Seagulls, because although the Seagulls are technically still in the hunt for finals, the chances of that dream becoming reality are proving slimmer by the week.
For the Saints however, they currently sit in fourth and will need to keep winning if they want to maintain the chance to play off for a double chance in that second week of the finals, should they win in week one.
Carlton vs North Melbourne
Sunday at 10:30am
Ikon Park
Although both sides have been disappointing for the most part, finals contention is still very much alive for both Carlton and North Melbourne.
Thus, this looms a must win clash for both sides.
They are currently both two wins outside the top six, and really cannot afford to drop anymore games if they want to make finals.
Both sides are also coming off good wins last week, so will be keen to maintain that momentum this weekend.
Hawthorn vs Casey
Sunday at 11:45am
Box Hill City Oval
It may be the final match of the weekend, but it could just as well be the match of the round.
First against third, and two of the most in-form teams this season meet, so expect one hell of an enthralling clash.
Casey will be keen to maintain its undefeated run, while Hawthorn will be keen to claim a big scalp as we head into the final month of the season.
Both teams have been playing some exceptional football of late, so expect a close clash.
