Rain forces QAFLW postponements

RAIN, rain, go away! Unfortunately for the QAFLW on the weekend, mother nature did not listen to those calls as rain reeked havoc on the competition.

Only two matches were able to go ahead as the Aspley and Southport grounds were unusable.

The match of the round was the second Grand Final rematch of 2022, which produced a very different result to the first time around.

Bond University’s home ground was living up to its nickname as the tough conditions meant clean possessions were going to be near impossible.

Although UQ were the first ones to get a score on the board, it was the Bull sharks who got the first goal on the board through Imogen Evans. However, the tough conditions meant it was more then six minutes in before Evans was able to convert.

The Bull sharks did a lot of the attacking in the subsequent seven minutes, but the rain was certainly the friend of the Red Lionesses as the Bond Uni kicks could not get the penetration necessary.

Even did manage to sneak around her defender again about 13 minutes in to pop through the second of the quarter for the hosts.

Bond Uni continued to pepper the goals, but just could not convert due to the tough conditions.

Evans’ two goals were ultimately all there was for goals in the first term, as the Bull sharks took a 13-point lead into the first break.

The second quarter was a much different story.

It did not take as long to open the scoring in the second term, as Kaitlyn Day soccered one off the ground to give UQ their first goal of the day.

Marnie McGorm nabbed UQ’s second only a matter of minutes later in very similar circumstances and suddenly UQ were within a point of the lead.

It was not long before Kristen Tyquin kicked the Red Lionesses’ third of the term and they took the lead.

Much of the remainder of the term was played between the arcs, so the scoring dried up.

At the main break the margin sat at a goal in favour of the visitors.

The conditions did not improve so it was a slog from both sides to get any forward momentum at all.

No goals were scored by either side in the second half as both teams slogged through the tough conditions out at Robina.

Both sides certainly had their chances, but just could not convert.

Particular kudos must be given to the UQ defence, who worked hard to stop a lot of late Bond University forward momentum.

In the end, the margin was nine points in favour of the visitors, who took the four points back to St Lucia and leap frogged Bond on the ladder.

For the victors, the run of Isobel Hartog and Madi Crowley-Long through the middle was seriously impressive, while Tyquin was impressive at both ends of the ground.

Meanwhile for the Bull sharks, Lily Tarlinton was impressive when she was in the ruck, as was Jasmyn Smith in the middle.

In the only other match that actually got to go ahead on the weekend, Coorparoo had a very comfortable win over Wilston Grange.

The Gorillas went scoreless all game as the Kings ran away with an 83 point win.

For the Kings, both Gabriella Abi-Fares and Chelsea Chesterfield kicked three majors, while Makeisha Muller kicked two.

Sally Young, Jo Miller and Laura Blue all starred in the win.

Meanwhile for the Gorillas, Lauren Shackleton, Ruby Ker and Kitty Adams were among their best in another tough loss.
