Southport’s undefeated status revoked as Red Lions topple Sharks
IN this week’s QAFLW match of the round, Southport’s undefeated streak came to an end at the hands of the University of Queensland.
It was all set up for the Red Lionesses in the first quarter with a three goal to none opening term.
It was a low scoring, very even opening part of the first term. Much of the action was between the 50 arcs, and fans looked set for an arm wrestle of a contest.
The visitors were the ones to first get a meaningful foray forward and they made it count when Luka Yoshida-Martin kicked truly from the pocket to put the Red Lionesses in front.
That first goal really got the ball rolling for UQ. They got another goal through Kristen Tyquin not long after then Madi Crowley-Long went on a run later in the term and kicked a brilliant goal from 30m out to give the Red Lionesses a handy three goal lead.
The Sharks really did not even look like scoring for much of the term. They had a few forward 50 entries late but did not really make the most of them.
They did put one behind on the board in the final few minutes though, so at the first change the lead was 17 points in favour of the visitors.
The second term was a much lower scoring and much tighter affair then the first.
It was the Sharks who got the first goal of the board through Brittany Perry, but UQ responded not long after through Louise Tyson to restore their 17 point lead.
They would be the only goals for the quarter in the end, so at the major break the margin was exactly the same as it was at quarter time – 17 points.
It was a tight affair again in the third term. It was free flowing, but the defensive pressure was high from both sides so goals were hard to come by.
There was an injury delay which stopped momentum for both sides late in the term, but the only goal in the term came off the boot of Yoshida-Martin, so as the teams turned for home the margin had stretched out to 24 points in favour of the Red Lionesses.
The final quarter was another low scoring but free flowing affair, with Southport in particular not making the most of their chances.
Tyquin’s second major was the only one of the term, but Southport certainly had their chances to claw back the lead. They peppered the goals for several minutes in the middle of the quarter, but just kept kicking behinds.
In the end, the result was never really in doubt as UQ went on to win by 27 points.
For UQ, Tyson and Tyquin both had stellar games, as did Laura Ernst, while for Southport Rianna Schipp, Madeleine Watt and Poppy Boltz all had great games.
In other results:
- Yeronga South Brisbane came crashing back to Earth this week, comfortably beaten by Coorparoo.
A 28 point quarter time lead to the Kings really set the scene of what was to come for the rest of the afternoon, as the Kings piled on five goals to one for the rest of the afternoon.
For Coorparoo, Jenae Govan booted three majors, while Makeisha Muller booted two, while Laura Blue and Chelsea Chesterfield both had another great game.
Meanwhile for the Devils, Ebony Milne, Elyse Glynn and Taylah Day all played well in what was another frustrating loss for the home side.
- Aspley bounced back from last week’s loss with a comfortable win over Wilston Grange.
The Gorillas actually led at quarter time, but did not kick a goal after that as the Hornets piled on eight goals to record a 48 point win.
Rachel Vetter kicked four goals for Aspley, while Mia Liddell kicked two of her own.
Meanwhile for Wilston Grange, Montana Dove, Uma Brennan and Georgia Smith were among the best for the Gorillas.
- Bond University played their second draw of the season, this time drawing with Maroochydore.
In a low scoring affair, scores were essentially dead even at every break, with the teams ultimately unable to be split even at the final siren.
Demi Norton, Rachel Crack and Chloe Gregory all played well for Maroochydore, while Caitlin Thorne, Annie Muir and Paris Lightfoot were among the best for Bond.
