Penultimate round shapes up to be a potential spicy season definer

IT is the penultimate round of the QAFLW this weekend, and every single match this weekend has got a season defining component to it, that is how close the ladder is at present.

The match of the round though has to be the top two clash between this season’s revelation Southport and the reigning premiers University of Queensland.

With both side’s likely to win their final round clashes next weekend, this match could go a long way to deciding who finishes top of the table.

These two sides have also been two of the top sides all year, so expect an absolutely cracking clash.

Last time these two sides met, it was actually UQ who got the chocolates that day as the Sharks suffered their first loss of the season.

That particular afternoon, in the shadows of Metricon Stadium, it was all set up for the Red Lionesses in the first quarter with a three goal to none opening term.

Kristen Tyquin and Luka Yoshida-Martin both kicked two majors for the Red Lionesses that day, while Brittany Perry scored the Sharks’ only major that particular afternoon.

Tyquin, Louise Tyson and Laura Ernst all had stellar games that afternoon, as did Rianna Schipp, Madeleine Watt and Poppy Boltz for the Sharks.

This time around though, both sides will likely be missing key players from that clash who are AFLW listed and therefore back at their AFLW clubs preparing for the season. Southport for one will be definitely missing Perry, who is now in South Australia, while AFLW listed players Alana Gee, Giselle Davies and Selina Priest all played last time these two sides met.

UQ on the other hand won’t be missing as many players from that previous clash as their opponents, with Yoshida-Martin likely the only one to miss.

Despite the comfortable margin last time around many of the stats were fairly even, UQ just made better use of their opportunities going into attack.

So overall fans can expect an enthralling clash, but who will come out on top? Not too long until we find out.

In other matches in the catalogue this week, Aspley have a must win clash against Bond Uni to keep their season alive, as do Coorparoo against Yeronga South Brisbane, and Maroochydore against Wilston Grange.
