Southport too strong for neighbours in Prelim

THE Southport Sharks have capped off a remarkable debut season in the QAFLW with a Preliminary Final win over Bond University to win through to the big dance.

The win was set up by a stellar second quarter from the Sharks, after they kicked four goals to none in the term.

Southport did much of the attacking early, before ultimately breaking through for a major via Tatum Shaw four minutes in.

The Sharks almost had another chance but it was touched on the line, but then after having very few forward 50 opportunities in the first half of the quarter, Bond finally got one on the board via Abbey Bevan.

Caitlin Miller returned serve for Southport to grow the buffer, but as the quarter drew to an end the ball was lodged in Bond’s attacking end. However, they could not capitalise and register a major so at the quarter time siren went the margin was seven points in favour of the Sharks.

Normally the third quarter is the premiership quarter, but Southport did not want to wait that long to assert their dominance on the game.

It was a pretty even start to the second term, with much of the action happening between the 50m arcs.

However, it was Southport who got the first major of the term on the board via Hannah Davies to extend their lead out to 13.

Kaylee Kimber booted the Sharks’ second for the term and all of a sudden they had quite the healthy buffer on their hands.

Brianna McFarlane made it three on the trot for the Sharks and their lead was out to four goals and things were looking good for the visitors.

Selina Priest got on the board in the dying minutes of the quarter and a Grand Final spot was looking more and more certain for the Sharks.

That would be the final score of the quarter, so at half time the margin sat at 30 points in the Sharks’ favour.

Miller opened the Sharks’ account for the third term with her second major to extend the lead out even further.

However, that would be the sole goal for the quarter as scoring really dried up for both sides. Much of the play was between the 50m arcs, but both sides certainly had their opportunities to score.

The score was just over six goals at the final break, and all Southport needed to do was have a repeat of the third term and the Grand Final spot was theirs.

It was a mere procession at times for Southport in the final term. They did concede one goal in the dying two minutes when Teagan Tatlock converted for Bond, but it did not matter in the end as the Sharks ran away with a 30 point win in the end.
