2022 AFL Draft Combine invitees announced

68 of the nation’s brightest AFL Draft prospects have been included in this year’s list of national combine invitees. The AFL announced today which players would be selected for the prestigious annual event, set to take place in Melbourne through October 7-9.

Vic Country is the region with the largest share of talent, producing 19 invitees. Headlining the bumper crop are top 10 hopefuls Jhye Clark and Aaron Cadman, while rising Gippsland Power gun Bailey Humphrey is among his club’s strong cohort.

On the Metro side of things, all bar one player – Lewis Hayes (Eastern Ranges) – hail from the prolific Oakleigh Chargers and Sandringham Dragons regions. The Chargers boast a high of nine invitees, including likely top 10 trio George Wardlaw, Elijah Tsatas, and Matthew Jefferson.

Top five talents Will Ashcroft and Harry Sheezel are the leading Dragons, with the former one of many club-tied talents to watch. Fellow Brisbane Lions father-son candidate Jaspa Fletcher is one of two Queenslanders involved, while Alwyn Davey Jr will be on the radar of Essendon fans.

Also tied to the Bombers is Next Generation Academy (NGA) talent Anthony Munkara, though he, Cameron Mackenzie (St Kilda), and Isaac Keeler (Adelaide) are unlikely to end up at their aligned clubs due to the new top 40 bidding rules.

While the Allied states and territories boast a total of 10 invitees, there are 13 from South Australia and 12 from the West. At this year’s National Championships, those three sides managed one win apiece but clearly have some top-end prospects to put on show come season’s end.

Having been a state-based exercise for the last couple of years, there will be room for expansion on the nationwide list this year should more players pop up with big performances. More names may be added, on top of the usual state-based combines.
