Allies annihilate WA in championship statement
THE ALLIES stamped their credentials as a genuine title contender in the AFL Under 18 National Championships, after thumping Western Australia by 88 points at Thebarton Oval today.
Having knocked off South Australia at the same venue last week, the multi-state collective made it two wins from as many games in the comprehensive 16.12 (108) to 2.8 (20) beating.
Dual unanswered streaks of eight goals split Western Australia’s two majors, with the Black Ducks having no answer for the Allies’ midfield dominance.
Tall forwards Charlie McCormack (four goals) and Jed Walter (three) dined out, while livewire small Jack Callinan joined in on the act as the trio combined for two-thirds of their side’s score.
Ironically, Western Australia kicked off the scoring in term one, with bustling forward Luker Kentfield converting on the end of a 50-metre penalty after four minutes.
It took some shaking off of the cobwebs, but once Walter broke through to put the Allies in front, they never looked back.
Only the Allies scored in term two, booting five goals to nil, and it took WA until 14 minutes into the third quarter to add their second and final six-pointer.
At 56 points to the good heading into three-quarter time, the finals 25 minutes was an utter procession for the victors.
They piled on five more majors to put the cherry on top a magnificent performance, with the scoring load shared between eight overall goal kickers.
It could not have been achieved without the likes of Colby McKercher and Ryley Sanders in midfield, who were rucked to by Ethan Read, and bookended by Connor O’Sullivan.
Now 2-0, the Allies can put their feet up until July 2, when they face Vic Metro in Queensland for their third of four games. Meanwhile, WA will lick their wounds and turn around for a home clash against 0-2 side, South Australia on June 24.
