PREVIEW | QAFLW Round 10: Top two face off

A MAMMOTH top of the table clash between Aspley and Southport is the standout clash for Round 10 of the QAFL Women’s competition, with the title contenders going at it. The Sharks will naturally head in as favourites with a mind-boggling 946.43 percentage, but the Hornets have beaten every other side this season to deservedly sit in second spot. We take a dive into that clash, and cast our eyes over the remaining three matches.

ASPLEY vs. SOUTHPORT
Saturday, June 17 @ Neil Upton Oval, 4:45pm

Southport is rightly premiership favourites this season, with an array of AFLW-experienced talent as well as players from various state leagues and future stars of the elite level. With few holes in the Sharks’ lineup, they are a juggernaut that will prove hard to beat.

Aspley on the other hand has some quality players who have grown through the club ranks and have becoming an incredibly strong unit that is now reaping the rewards. Though the Hornets missed out on getting to the pointy end of finals last season, they look to have put past seasons behind them and are firing on all cylinders.

Hornets co-skippers Courtney Daniec and Angela Lingard will lead by example, while Abby Pengelly and Lucia Liessi are among those to have come through the state ranks. Emma Pittman and the inclusion of Mikayla Martin (Maroochydore) have only further strengthened the Hornets’ nest.

Southport has no shortage of talent, headlined by the Sharks’ co-captain Selina Priest and ex-Cat Carly Remmos. North Adelaide premiership skipper Kristi Harvey will be a huge inclusion in what will be her second game for the club, while key forward Georja Davies returns and will be a target inside 50.

Expect the Sharks to be a touch too good, but the home deck at Aspley could be a key factor in the Hornets’ favour. While Southport is used to winning big, this could be its biggest challenge yet, so expect the clash to be a thriller.

COORPAROO vs. UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
Saturday, June 17 @ Giffin Park, 2:00pm

Two sides desperate for a win will be fifth placed Coorparoo and sixth placed University of Queensland. The Kings looked good early in the season, but have fallen back to fifth after a defeat at the hands of Wilston Grange, but a win here will see them retain that fourth spot. The Red Lionesses have gradually found some form after a forgettable start, but defeat in this game will essentially put a line through their finals aspirations.

MAROOCHYDORE vs. YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE
Saturday, June 17 @ Neil Upton Oval, 2:00pm

In what is a bottom two clash, Maroochydore should pick up its third win of the season against a winless Yeronga South Brisbane in what will be a last chance saloon for the Roos if they are to make a late charge for finals. Back at home on the Sunshine Coast, the green and gold will look to find that competitive spirit they have shown at times and have a bit too much quality for the Devils.

BOND UNIVERSITY vs. WILSTON GRANGE
Saturday, June 17 @ Bond University Oval, 2:00pm

Bond University will look to leap back into the top two with a victory over the Gorillas, especially if as expected, Southport defeats Aspley. The Bull Sharks have only lost to the top two sides and are set for another QAFL Women’s finals series, and given they have the pick of the Gold Coast Suns Academy talents, will prove very difficult to beat. The Gorillas have been grinding out wins but a percentage of 60.64 hurts and they will be keen to cause an upset here.
