2023 AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division Preview: Round 11
TWO finals hopefuls do battle in a massive clash, while the top two teams look to assert their authority on their bottom two opposition sides in Round 11 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division.
NORTH SHORE BOMBERS vs. PENNANT HILLS DEMONS
Saturday, June 24 @ Gore Hill Oval, 11:50am
In a massive clash that is anticipated to be the most highly contested match of the year so far, the fifth placed Demons travel to the seventh placed Bombers. The battle for fifth place is right on and the winner gains huge advantages in that race .
The two teams are evenly matched, and have contrasting strengths and weaknesses. Pennant Hills needs to find a way to play through the corridor, from Brianna Wade to Laura Donohue. The Demons also need to get cleaner possession around the ground when being pressured.
Alternatively, North Shore will be looking to extract from contests with quick hands and then long kicking and marking. Either way it will be a tight contest, and it will depend on whom has done the work to manufacture cleaner footy and hut the scoreboard.
Watch for Matilda Eder and Ava Barraclough to look to run and break lines, and Demons duo Tayla Duguid and Liz Gordon trying to stop them. Both teams have a marking presence up forward if they get the ball there, while Kaitlin Noble is a key rebounding force for the Demons that could be the difference.
An evenly matched game with the winner hard to separate.
EAST COAST EAGLES vs. UNSW-ES BULLDOGS
Saturday, June 24 @ Kanebridge Oval, 5:50am
East Coast should continue in its merry way in this one, but UNSW-ES will be sick of not troubling the scoreboard for large periods during games this season. With a few tweaks to the gameplan, the Bulldogs could be competitive, though it will be tough against the benchmark side.
Watch for competition leading goalkicker Caitlin Davidson to put up another big bag of goals, while Maddie Kohlrusch looks to continue her good form. East Coast to win comfortably.
SOUTHERN POWER vs. UTS BATS
Saturday, June 24 @ Waratah Oval, 2:10am
In a battle between second and last, it is expected UTS Bats will win and the margin will be extensive. Southern Power picked up their first points of the season via an abandoned draw, but were 31-0 down at the time.
They found it very difficult to find linkages or clean possession and will be hoping for a lot more of it. After a really tough top-end victory last week, UTS needs to make sure it clean things up, find space and put their foot down to continue to build towards finals.
SYDNEY UNIVERSITY vs. MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY GOANNAS
Saturday, June 24 @ Gore Hill Oval, 11:50am
In what shapes as Sydney Uni’s biggest test so far since hitting some good form of late. They have struggled to get wins on the board all year, but really toughed it out to win last round. To win this match, the Students will need to shut down the Macquarie Uni running and extracting from the coalface.
Expect Amanda Farrugia to rack up the possessions, while the Students look to maintain possession, take it slow and turn it into a hard slog for the Goannas. Macquarie University should be too strong, but Sydney Uni is capable of anything on its day.
Bye: Manly Warringah Wolves
