The Coates Talent League is unique in the fact it has a pre-finals Wildcard Round. Minor premier Tasmania earned a week off, while the remaining 12 regions were split into Country and Metro conferences.
Two lower-ranked sides caused boilovers this year, with Eastern eliminating Calder and Oakleigh defeating Northern. Although, the Knights earned a reprieve and progressed to finals as the highest-ranked loser from the Metro pool.
In the knockout Quarter Finals, Tasmania very nearly fell to Gippsland but found a way to win as Geelong upset GWV to keep its season alive. On the Metro side, Eastern snuck past a peaking Oakleigh side while Sandringham made comparatively light work of Northern.
The two conferences will now cross over in the prelims. Top-ranked Country team Tasmania will take on the lowest-ranked Metro team in Eastern, and the inverse fixture sees Sandringham face Geelong in a double-header at Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval.

All four finalists took to the field in week one of the SANFL Under 18s finals, with minor premier South Adelaide winning through to this year’s decider. The Panthers beat Central District by nine points to ensure the second-placed Bulldogs would need to lean on their double chance.
Unfortunately for Centrals fans, their side was bundled out in straight sets this past weekend. Sturt, who stayed alive with a week one knockout win over Woodville-West Torrens, controlled the Preliminary Final to win by 45 points and qualify for Sunday’s Grand Final at Adelaide Oval.

Three sides finished with 13 wins in the WAFL Colts, with Perth taking out top spot from Claremont and East Fremantle. Though, it was the Tigers who became the first side to qualify for the Grand Final after beating the Sharks in week one, and the Demons in week two.
Perth will now lean on its double chance as East Fremantle has already done, when the two sides meet in Sunday’s preliminary final. Either way, two of the three 13-win teams will play off in what is set to be a terrific decider. Date, time and venue are yet to be confirmed for the season’s final fixture.
Elsewhere in the finals race, Subiaco knocked out 2022 Grand Finalist West Perth in the first week, but was eliminated over the weekend by East Fremantle. The Lions were just off the leading pack with 12 wins, while the Falcons snuck into fifth with a 7-9 record.
