IN a match that had momentum swings and both teams trying to make most of their opportunities in front of goal, the Swans stepped up in the second half to win by 15 points at Alberton Oval to gather its third win of the season.
With the two teams having close results in round 5, the Swans lifted in the fourth term, kicking two goals in the quarter whilst also keeping the Power scoreless in the second half, scoring 6.9 to 3.12.
Although both teams didn’t make most of their opportunities in the first quarter, the Swans were more efficient with the ball, with the likes of Ally Morphett, Laura Gardiner and Sofia Hurley playing a big role.
In the third quarter, the Power didn’t make most of their opportunities in front of goal, and while the Swans kicked one major, they controlling the tempo and keeping possession of the ball to seal the victory.
While the Swans made most of their opportunities with their handballs (93-48) and disposals (242-183), the Power were dominant in the efficiency category, 65 percent to the Swans, 41 percent. The Swans also dominated the contested and uncontested categories.
Sydney Swans coach Scott Gowans spoke about the turnaround result compared to last year and his team’s improvement.
“It was all about what we could do today and how we can continue our journey,” he said.
Gowans spoke about the resilience of the group, especially when the game got tight.
“We’ve done a lot of resilience in games of footy,” he said. “Resilience can be athlete based, it can be personal but also as a team. We only have a very small leadership this year.”
“We have a few set plays that when they (Power) had the run, we were able to put a foot on the break and today we got it right.”
Gowans spoke about the driving factor within the playing group.
“During pre-season, we spoke about the responsibility of having time,” he said. “Once you have responsibility to perform, it’s a hard way to play footy. We’re able to practice that in the pre-season, got a few wins in the pre season, which flowed on into the regular season. The growth has been big but I think it has been well planned and I think the girls have brought into the program.”
Gowans spoke about the performance of Laura Gardiner and her influence on the sides victory.
“Laura is an outstanding footballer,” he said. “There’s some some areas to fix up in her game defensively, which she’s working really hard on. The great thing I love about Laura is when you sit down and do a review with her, she takes it all in, she goes out to training and tries to practice exactly what you’re telling her. She’s got the potential to be a superstar in the competition. It’s a great story and a credit to her.”
