WAFLW 24 to Watch in 2024: Juliet Kelly

BACK for another year, Rookie Me Central’s 24 to Watch in 2024 returns and this year, the focus is on underage players, being those who are yet to have an AFLW Draft chance. For the list of 2024, it will range between players who are predominantly 2006 (top-age) and 2007-born likely to take the WAFL Women’s by storm or set themselves up for the future.

Claremont young gun Juliet Kelly cracked into the reigning premiers’ side from the opening round of the season, as the double bottom-ager showed she can match it against senior opponents. Though she fluctuated in and out of the WAFL Women’s side, she also represented Western Australia at the AFLW Under 16 Championships.

SUMMARY

Though many reigning premiership sides are hard to crack into, Kelly managed to do it from the opening round of the season following an impressive preseason outing against East Perth. She picked up 11 disposals on debut against East Fremantle, and held her spot for Round 2. She would go on to play seven games – including four consecutive ones between Rounds 10-14, before dropping back to Rogers Cup at the end of the season.

Kelly played the four games – including two finals – for the Tigers at Rogers Cup level, but averaged 9.4 disposals, 1.0 marks and 1.6 tackles at League level. Though the numbers might not jump off the page, Kelly is more damaging than sheer stats suggest, which is a key reason why coach Jack Schwarze was so keen to get her into the League side.

She is composed with ball-in-hand and makes good decisions, often coming off half-back and pushing up the ground. Her form earned her a place in the Under 16s’ state squad where she ran out in the 10-goal victory over Vic Country, collecting 10 disposals, two marks, two tackles and two rebound 50s off half-back.

Kelly provides some run and carry out of defence, always looking to be creative and set up her teammates, or bring them into the game. Though her production numbers could increase, the youngster has a lot of potential and is why she has earned a place on this list as a player to watch in 2024.
