SANFLW 24 to Watch in 2024: Coby Morgan

BACK for another year, Rookie Me Central’s 24 to Watch in 2024 returns and this time around, the focus is on underage players, being those who are yet to have an AFLW Draft chance. For the list of 2024, it will range between players who are predominantly 2006 (top-age) and 2007-born talents likely to take the SANFL Women’s by storm or set themselves up for the future.

Norwood speedster Coby Morgan enjoyed an impressive full season at SANFL Women’s level, learning on the fly as she stepped up to the SANFL Women’s. Running out for the Redlegs in 13 games after playing the solitary match in 2022, Morgan developed throughout the course of the season to show promising signs heading into 2024.

COBY MORGAN PROFILE

DOB: 14/11/2006
Height: 173cm
Position: Forward
Club: Norwood

SUMMARY

Now a top-ager, Morgan presents as one of the South Australians with plenty of upside left in her game. She has elite speed and can burn off opponents with ease, particularly when able to get goalside and run into open space. Though largely stationed in attack, Morgan did get some time up the ground later in the year.

Morgan managed one game at the AFL Women’s Under 18 Championships where she had 11 disposals and laid two tackles, winning the majority of her touches under pressure in Perth. At 173cm, Morgan’s size is another advantage, with her athleticism and ability to usually have a height advantage on opponents giving her an extra boost.

Gradually the Redlegs talent has ironed out some of her technical areas such as using one hand rather than two when disposing of the ball. Not a massive accumulator, Morgan averaged 6.5 disposals, 2.7 tackles and 1.1 inside 50s at SANFL Women’s level, kicking seven goals from her 13 games.

In 2024, Morgan will look to work more up the ground and get into ball-winning positions, as she can utilise her speed to consistently explode and break the lines for her side between the arcs. Though not the finished profile just yet, Morgan is one who could come on in leaps and bounds.
