Drafted duo depart with place in RMC Medal top 10

JUST as quickly as mid-season draftees Tom Hanily and Will McLachlan entered the Rookie Me Central Medal top 10, they depart the Coates Talent League for higher honours after last night’s intake. Both players earned three votes in Round 9 to feature on the leaderboard but will not add to their tallies.

Hanily heads to Sydney after booting two goals from 21 disposals in Gippsland’s 18-point win over Sandringham, taking his total votes to eight – good enough for equal-seventh. Brisbane recruit McLachlan features in equal-fifth on nine votes after snaring six goals as Geelong Falcons beat GWV.

While the over-age pair leave having made a mark in this year’s count, a couple of top-age stars have again set themselves apart in top spot. Namely, Vic Metro pair Josh Smillie (Eastern) and Jagga Smith (Oakleigh) share first place on 13 votes apiece, after both earning best afield nods on the weekend.

Smillie collected over 30 disposals and booted multiple goals for the third time in four appearances, helping his Ranges defeat Bendigo. Meanwhile, Smith amassed 50 touches in Oakleigh’s loss to Western, taking out Player of the Week honours for the third-best disposal haul in competition history.

Others to notch a full allotment of votes this week include bottom-age Tasmanian ruck Jasper Hay and five-goal Murray swingman Matt Whitlock. In the respective opposition sides, club captains Zak Johnson (Northern) and Damon Hollow (Calder) strengthened their spots in the top five by polling in losses.
