Victorian 2024 AFLW U18s squads named
VICTORIA is set for the 2024 AFL Women’s Under 18s Championships after both the Country and Metro squads for the national carnival were named today. The last state sides to name their squads having considered players from across the state after recent Victorian trials, the Metro squad comprises of 29 players, while Country has selected 28.
Among the Country side are AFLW Academy members Ash Centra, Lou Painter, Sara Howley, Millie Lang, Zoe Besanko and Elli Symonds, the latter of which has been injured all season but is hoped to be able to return through the carnival at some stage.
The majority of the team is top-agers as expected, though Under 16s MVP Ella Stoddart and emerging Geelong Falcons midfielder Stella Huxtable feature as bottom-age prospects. Recent strong form from the likes of Makhaela Bluhm, Lavinia Cox and Sasha Pearce has seen them elevated into the Vic Country squad after not initially being named in the country hub.
Vic Metro has a stacked midfield, headlined by AFLW Academy members Sophie McKay and Sierra Grieves, while defenders Sienna Tallariti and Grace Baba will provide great rebound, and Emma McDonald will be a focal point in attack.
From a bottom-age perspective, Calder duo Chloe Baker-West and Jade McLay both made the final squad, as did both likely rucks in Josephine Bamford and Isobella Hishongwa-Gibb. Northern Knights small forward/midfielder Marlo Graham and Oakleigh utility Chloe Bown are the other underage players.
Oakleigh Chargers premiership coach Ty Vickery will lead Vic Metro this year, while Geelong Falcons coach Mel Hickey will again take the reigns of Vic Country. The former will get the first taste of action with the opening match of the national carnival this Saturday against the Allies in Blacktown, which Vic Country travels to Queensland to face the Maroons on Sunday, July 7.
The all-Victorian clash is slated for Sunday, July 14, before a gap to August 11 where both teams will again feature, ahead of Metro hosting South Australia and Country facing Western Australia.
