Reigning premier Bull Sharks storm into prelim
REIGNING premiers Bond University put Coorparoo to the sword at different stages during their elimination final clash, first during the second term, and then again in the last on the Bull Sharks’ way to a comfortable 53-point win. The Bull Sharks kept their premiership defence alive for another week and eliminated the Kings in the process, booting 4.4 to 0.0 in quarter two after being level at the first break.
Though the Kings managed to keep in touch and even won the third term by a couple of points, they faced an uphill battle heading into the last stanza with a 26-point deficit. Bond University stepped up to the plate again, kicking 4.3 to 0.0 in the fourth to run away with the 10.8 (68) to 2.3 (15) victory at Bond University.
The Bull Sharks monopolised possession, racking up 119 more disposals (310-191) and had 20 more inside 50s (36-16) in an incredibly high-skilled game from both sides. Coorparoo actually was far higher efficiently than either of the two teams in the other game (75.4 per cent), but Bond University ran at an elite 81 per cent. Scoring every second time their went in there on average, the Bull Sharks’ scoring capacity was too strong.
The win was built off winning the ball on the inside (128-87 contested possessions) and outside (177-93 uncontested possessions), while having 19 more hitouts and 12 more marks, though Coorparoo did actually shark the clearances to finish with a plus-two advantage (30-28).
It came as no surprise that the youth of the Bull Sharks really stood up, with Nyalli Milne named best on ground by the coaches for her 17 disposals, four marks – one contested – and two inside 50s, using the ball at a superb 88.2 per cent. Top star Havana Harris (21 disposals, four marks, two clearances, 19 hitouts, five inside 50s and three goals) stuffed the stat sheet and also ran at a high efficiency of 85.7 per cent.
Mia Salisbury (25 disposals, three marks, two clearances, three tackles and four inside 50s), Bronte Parker (21 touches, 11 tackles) and Annabelle Foat (16 disposals, three clearances and three tackles) were also influential in the victory. Of the non-State Academy members, Shannon Nolan (24 disposals, two marks, three clearances, three tackles and five inside 50s) did some great work, as did skipper Paris Lightfoot (18 disposals, three tackles and two inside 50s).
Mia Teubler was named Coorparoo’s best in defeat, winning 16 touches, three marks and three tackles in the loss, while the on-ball group of Grace Roberts-White (18 disposals, five clearances and five tackles), Lucy Schneider (18 disposals, five clearnaces and three marks) and Jessica Watts (17 disposals, five clearances and seven tackles) were all strong. Developing tall State Academy member Chloe Gaunt had nine disposals, five marks – two contested – 13 hitouts and three inside 50s in the win.
