Battle of the Coach Cams sees sides unable to be split

THE AFL Women’s season already has its second draw after Gold Coast fought back to snatch a draw against an injured ravaged GWS side, who almost found themselves with no fit players by the time the final siren went.

With his side letting the chance to pick up a second win of the season slip, Giants coach Cam Bernasconi was left to ponder what might have been.

“Yeah, it’s interesting how to feel after that kind of game,” Bernasconi said.

“I think at halftime we were down to three on the bench and then within the first two minutes we’re down to two on the bench. So to walk away with two points is, I don’t know. Yeah, I’m super proud of the girls that their ability to step in, step forward and essentially run out of game with only two rotations.

“So we’ll learn from learn from that last couple of minutes and then respond, but I’m really proud of the group.”

For most of the match GWS were on top of the game, particularly the scoreboard, and Bernasconi said that his side had a few key areas of focus to achieve that.

“I think in the first half when we got on top, it was our ability to transition, to match it on the inside, but then to be really hard to defend with our speed moving forward and also pressure on the footy,” he said. “And then to be honest, in the second half was just putting out spot fires and trying to make sure that we could play a type of football that would allow us to go the whole way and probably slow it down a little bit.

“I thought the girls did really well in that sense to go from plan A to plan B, which is pretty good. The complete opposite to take the tempo out of the game, which they did really well.”

On the flipside of the equation, Suns coach Cam Joyce was able to find the positives in the outcome.

“Disappointed not to get the full points, there’s no doubt we came here for that,” Joyce said. “I suppose second prize was to draw the game, so really happy for Jamie to really nail that set shot at the end. She’s sort of built for those moments, Jamie. So we had a lot of confidence that she’d go back and kick it. So yeah, obviously got us two points and a little step forward from last week, but, but still not exactly where we want to be.”

Joyce also noted how his team was able to fight back well to bring the game back to a draw.

“Yeah, no doubt, and even they probably jumped us and kick the first couple of goals of the game and the girls were able to fight back and keep the next couple,” he said.

“So, we know we’ve got a really good group like that. We’ve got a solid group that, that will keep fighting and keep pushing. I think probably just a little bit of execution at times, just let us down throughout the game that we could have been better, to put ourselves in a better position to win the game.”
