Tigers tame valiant Cats in thrilling tussle

RICHMOND was really made to work for its week seven win against Geelong yesterday, ultimately prevailing by seven points after the lead changed multiple times in the back end of the final quarter.

“I thought the game was a real seesawing battle, and I’m sure that it must have been a great watch as a bit of a heart stopper for the people involved, but must have been great for the spectator,” Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson said after the match.

Ferguson said that what pleased hi about the win most was that it was not individuals, rather “everyone taking their moment at a certain time”.

“I thought so many different people had really big moments, important moments, calm moments,” he said.

“We probably started a little bit rushed. “I thought we were a bit desperate in the first quarter and not quite assertive enough, but as the game unfolded, we started to play the situation a bit better.

“The fundamentals were a bit sharper. “We did make a few structural changes that we’ve seen has joined from opposition teams against Geelong that have impacted. “Evening up a bit more taking their time and space away.”

Ferguson was expecting Geelong to come out really hard against his side, with the Cats fighting to keep their season alive.

“I think they’re a fantastic team and maybe not everything’s gone their way this year and a few injuries here or there, or just not quite had the finishing touch at times,” Ferguson said.

“But we know they’re a fantastic team and dare I say, if they got over the line today, you never know what they’re capable of.

“We’re absolutely stoked to be able to fight all the way to the end and beat, they were half a kick away from a grand final last year. “That’s the team that they are. “So really happy with that.”

One of Ferguson’s stars yesterday who was limited in her impact yesterday but really stood up late was Katie Brennan, and was described by her coach as “super important on=field and off-field.”

“She’s gotten so much better understanding that she doesn’t have to be a hero as such,” Ferguson said, speaking about Brennan. She just needs to keep herself lively and ready to impact whatever the next play may be and if that comes to her great, she’ll be ready but if not, just keep being ready.”
