Dockers down Eagles to move closer to top four

FREMANTLE’s surge towards a return to the AFLW finals is continuing after a comfortable Western Derby win over West Coast.

Speaking post match, Dockers coach Lisa Webb was pleased with the intent and determination from her side.

“I thought the girls had that strong intent from the start. They’re fiercely determined to do well as they always are, but we just got it right early, which set us up,” Webb said.

“And I know there’s been a lot of talk about our stars. I was proud that we got to work into a bit of a breeze as well, and then they came hard.”

The Dockers got out to a really strong start to the match, but Webb said that nothing was changed on their end to make the three goal to none start happen.

“That’s the thing, we knew we’d created opportunities in the past,” Webb assured.

“We really wanted to make sure that we kind of made them count this week as we do every week. But sometimes it’s just the way the game goes.”

The win sees Fremantle now only one win out of the top four, but Webb said that the effects of a potential win on the side’s top four hopes were not discussed pre match.

“Not at all to be honest,” Webb said.

“We just want to get back to the footy and I thought the girls took it out really well. I thought they were strong around the contest, some big tackles, and once again, we went a bit shorter. We put a heavy reliance on Mim and we just know how reliable she is and she’s becoming a remarkable player. I think she played 96 percent game time up against some great rucks, so exceptional effort from her.”

Webb also explained how much a Derby win means to the group, especially for the group’s newer faces.

“It means a lot. Obviously, we always aspire to play finals as well, and we knew it was a big match,” Webb explained.

“We put a lot on what type of brand of footy we want to make, and I guess the last few weeks have been a bit disappointing. The girls are as hard as anyone on themselves and for them to fight it back big pressure week. Everyone’s talking about it. It’s quite interesting seeing like your Gabby Newton and your Ash Braz that they haven’t experienced anything like it.

“So for them to kind of come in and play their role in a big game, but probably the big shout out as well is to Jess Low and Jae Flynn, they was so good today. I mean, they played their role, which they do, and we’re really lucky to have those type of players out there for us.”
