Cats claim crucial win to keep faint hope alive
GEELONG continued its late finals surge towards the top eight, defeating Waalitj Marawarby 33 points at Mineral Resources Park off the back of a brilliant individual performance by Aishling Moloney.
Speaking to the media post game, Cats coach Daniel Lowther shared how pleased he was of his side’s performance and what it meant for the context of the Cats season.
“To come over as a team and know that it was 11 vs 12, West Coast had a lot to play for aswell, but so do we finish our year strong as we possibly can,” Lowther said.
“That was always the aim to finish really strong. We know there’s a few things that have to go our way above us. It’s not really our concern. I’m really pleased for the group to get a hard fought win.
“First half was a real tight arm wrestle. I thought West Coast came out and were really strong around the contest and went forward with their run and carry was super. From end to end, it was hard to defend against.”
“I thought the girls did a really good job after half time to clean up the contested numbers and slow their attack down and make the most of chances of going forward.”
Joining Lowther at the press conference, Moloney agreed with her coach’s view on the game and insights on a tough contested match.
“The score didn’t really reflect how actually tough the game was. A few of our girls are feeling the pinch of it,” she said. “It was quite physical and respect to West Coast and what they brought, they’ve made strides from last year to this year.
“The score didn’t reflect how tough and physical the game actually was at the end.”
