Lions tune up for finals with a big win

BRISBANE has capped off the home and away portion of its 2024 AFLW season with a big win over Euro-Yroke down in Melbourne.

Despite the win, Brisbane will be on the road for week one of finals but Lions coach Craig Starcevich is not worried about that at all.

“No, our team actually prefer that, to be honest,” Starcevich said.

“They get away and perform pretty well when they’re on the road. So, exciting November coming up and we’ve kicked off on the right step.”

When asked about whether his side took lessons out of the loss to Geelong about getting off to a strong start, Starcevich agreed that they did.

“We were passive in that first half of the first quarter against Geelong a couple of weeks ago,” Starcevich said.

“So, we’re sort of hell bent on not looking like that again. So we’ve been talking about that for a fortnight basically. It’s nice to have a little wake up lesson a couple of weeks out from the finals. Still some bits and pieces to fix today, but in the main pretty good.”

One player that drew praise from Starcevich was Jennifer Dunne, who stood tall in defence.

“Jen’s been great, and I’m hopeful and probably expecting her to come into all Australian contention as a tall defender” Starcevich said.

“But even at the back end of last year, she took on some big opponents and did really well, and this year has just grown and grown from that. She’s also getting a bit of her own ball now, which is good on the way out.

“Supreme athlete, loves a contest, playing against a really good opponent today but she keeps growing.”

Things did not quite fully to go to plan for the Lions against the Saints though, with Sophie Conway sending a scare through the camp with an injury concern, but Starcevich was not worried about its severity.

“They tell me it’s nothing major” Starcevich confirmed.

“Maybe those types of things, you might end up with a, a low grade AC spraining, which is sort of move on, you know? So that’s hopefully that’s all it is.”

Starcevich did say that more broadly the overall squad health was looking pretty good heading into that first week of the finals.

“Physically there were a few beaten up today, nothing major” Starcevich said.

“But it was a tough game physically, which is actually good preparation coming into high pressure games that finals are. I’m sure they’ll all be fine and we’ll get going again, but as far as our list goes, I think we’re 29 available this weekend, which is super, so from that point of view, that’s helpful.”
