North storms to minor premiership after dominant display
NORTH Melbourne has completed a remarkable undefeated home and away season, after finishing the home and away season with a comfortable win over Gold Coast.
Gold Coast gave some glimpses of hope, but ultimately the Kangaroos were far too strong.
Reflecting on what he had just watched post match, Roos coach Darren Crocker said that his side’s ball movement was what pleased him the most.
“I think our ball movement was something that we addressed after the Adelaide game last week. We didn’t feel like we could get much flow on the football in that game,” Crocker said.
“It was something that we looked at as a learning and practice and our ability to transition the ball, especially from defensive 50 to inside 50, was really strong today and probably a little bit of connection. So going inside 50 could have been better, but I felt that was a really strong aspect of what we’re trying to work on and build on today.”
North Melbourne has become only the third side in AFLW history to go through the season undefeated, and Crocker was full of praise for everyone at the club who was involved in making the achievement happen.
“If you’d have said to me at the start of the year that we go through the year undefeated, I would have said God, that’s a pretty tough ask, to have any team go through and play the top footy and maintain it throughout a whole home and away season,” Crocker said.
“But all credit to everyone within our program. The coaches who have been able to educate and coached the players really well, the staff who have been able to prepare them and get them on the track and well prepared for match day, and then to the players themselves to just keep getting themselves up.
“We do talk about a full squad mentality, and fortunately we haven’t had too many injuries throughout the year. But I felt that whenever we’ve had to bring a player in, they’ve been able to play their role and really add to what the team needed.”
Although the pressure is fully on the Roos now to go all the way, Crocker explained that it all starts again now that it is finals.
“As I just spoke to the players, the first box we wanted to tick was get through the home and away season. That’s the season itself that tells you where you’re at, where you actually end up finishing on the grid. For us we finished right at the front of the grid, which is really pleasing, and now a totally new season begins,” Crocker explained.
“The finals, we’ll lean into it, we’ll look to enjoy it as much we possibly can. We’ll look to bring our best football that we can play throughout that period of time, and just enjoy bringing our best football.”
