WHILE the dust might not have even settled on North Melbourne’s groundbreaking maiden premiership over the weekend, all 18 clubs have quickly set their sights on 2025. In what is ultimately four-day turnaround from the grand final to the opening day of the off-season, the Restricted Free Agency and Delisted Free Agency Period opens today.
It marks the first day of the AFL Women’s off-season, in what will be a 12-day window of madness that includes signings, re-signings, trades and of course the AFLW Draft. As a quick reminder, we will keep you up to date in what to look out for over the next fortnight.
Restricted Free Agency and Delisted Free Agency Period
Wednesday, December 4 – Wednesday December 11
The Restricted Free Agency and Delisted Free Agency Period gives all 18 clubs the opportunity to sign players from opposition teams who are without a contract from their current club. Along with the first week of the off-season, a second Delisted Free Agency period runs for 48 hours from December 12-13.
AFLW Trade Period
Thursday, December 5 – Wednesday, December 11
The AFLW Trade Period promises to be an exciting week of action finishing just five days prior to the 2024 National AFLW Draft. Names such as Charlie Rowbottom, Lily Mithen, Tara Bohanna and Najwa Allen are among those to either be rumoured to change clubs, or have requested moves already.
Second Delisted Free Agency Period
Thursday, December 12 – Friday, December 13
As mentioned above, a second Delisted Free Agency Period will run the two days post-Trade Period to enable any players without a contract and were unable to have a trade facilitated, can be signed to an AFLW list ahead of the AFLW Draft.
AFLW Draft
Monday, December 16
The close of the 2024 AFLW off-season major events is of course the draft, which will be a fully national event for the first time. Collingwood currently holds Pick 1 and is tipped to opt for Gippsland Power’s Ash Centra with that selection. The draft picks will be confirmed at the end of the Second Delisted Free Agency Period which determines how many selections each of the AFLW clubs can make.
Supplementary Signing Period
Monday, February 3 – Friday, February 28
Unlike in the men’s competition, the Supplementary Signing Period for the AFLW does not open until February and essentially runs for the month. That period is where clubs can opt to fill remaining list spots with players who have been training with the senior squad.
