2024 AFLW Draft preview: GWS Giants

GWS GIANTS head into Monday night’s draft having traded in two selections, but as it stands look likely to use neither without a couple more delistings or inactives, as the western Sydney side looks to make the most of another AFLW Draft.

2024 RECORD: 16th, 1-9-1, 70.4%
2024 PICKS: 3, 21, 52, 65

LIST CHANGES:
IN: Eleanor Brown (Western Bulldogs), Taylah Levy (Adelaide), Grace Kos (Ireland), Pick 52, Pick 65
OUT: Annise Bradfield (retired), Jasmine Grierson, Caitlin Miller, Jemma Ramsdale (delisted), Nicola Barr (St Kilda), Courtney Murphy (Essendon), Pick 39, Pick 57

FIRST PICK:
Pick 3

GWS Giants held onto the coveted pick three and will have a few options to pick from. With Ash Centra Collingwood bound and Havana Harris tied to the Gold Coast Suns, it appears the race has come down to three. West Australian duo Zippy Fish and Molly O’Hehir provide great speed and skill across the ground, with Fish an explosive midfielder, while O’Hehir can play on all three lines but will likely roll off half-back.

Melbourne looms large to likely take one of them, with South Australian India Rasheed the other choice in the mix. The Sturt prospect provides a high impact-per-possession in the front half of the ground and will add X-Factor to the side. It will come down to what Melbourne does, but essentially the Giants can fill a hole with some serious excitement no matter who they choose.

REMAINING CROP:
Picks 21, 52, 65

As it stands, the Giants can only select one additional player, though there is still time for further list changes prior to Monday night’s AFLW Draft. At Pick 21, the Giants have to decide if they will go for a local Academy member or not, with the pick perhaps higher than where a bid would come in. They are not too far behind though, with all three of Ash Patton, Amelie Prosser-Shaw and Ellie Hall in the 25-40 bracket.

There is still a chance they look outside their own Academy, with the Giants being in a good spot to fill a need. Oakleigh Chargers midfielder Sarah Poustie would be around that mark and will add to the midfield depth at the club, while key position trio Georgie Brisbane, Grace Belloni and Claire Mahony are also a chance to be thereabouts. Another name for Giants fans to keep a look out for is South Australian utility Grace Martin, who similar to Poustie has a variety of traits across the board.

KEY QUESTIONS:

– Will the Giants make any other list changes to open up another list spot?
– Will GWS select any of the three Academy members?
– Which way do the Giants go with Pick 3?
