ST MARY’S has gained a confidence-boosting win in the NTFL Women’s Premier Division over the Saints’ biggest threat to the flag, defeating PINT in an entertaining Round 16 contest. While the other matches were one-sided, that top of the table clash provided an intriguing twist in the lead-up to the NTFL finals series.
Top of the table clash sees Saintly victory
The top of the table clash saw PINT suffer its first loss of the season, going down to St Mary’s by 20 points.
PINT’s slow start ultimately came back to bite. PINT did not kick a major in the first term compared to St Mary’s two, and for the rest of the match the Green Ants were playing catch up and ultimately failed.
Caitlin Sargent kicked three majors for the Saints in the win, and was ably assisted with two majors from Nadia Von Bertouch. Meanwhile Amy Chittick and Cate Laurie were the only goal kickers for PINT.
Tiwi further entrenched into top four
The other result on the smaller end of the scale was out at TIO Stadium as the Tiwi Bombers helped further cement their place in the top four with a five-goal win over the Southern Districts.
The Bombers jumped out to a two and a half goal lead at the first change, and further extend that lead in the third term, and the Districts just had no answers to try and bridge the deficit.
Freda Puruntatameri and Maria Rioli lead the way in front of goal for Tiwi, finishing with a pair of goals each, while Bonnie Brown and Eva Harris were the only ones to get on the scoreboard for Southern Districts.
Palmerston pummels Darwin
In the battle of the finals qualification, Palmerston picked up a huge win over Darwin, both in margin and in importance for the Magpies’ hopes of making finals.
Palmerston kept Darwin scoreless for over a half of football, and by the time the Buffaloes did score Palmerston was about 10 goals in front, and went on to win by 85 points.
Marika Carlton starred in front of goal for Palmerston and finished with five goals, while Ciana Niesner, Tatyana Perry and Iesha Ronberg also kicked multiple goals.
Nightcliff wallops Waratah
The other big margin of the weekend saw Nightcliff thrash Waratah, coming away with a 91-point win.
The second and fourth quarters were the telling quarters for the Tigers, as they kicked three goals to none and five goals to none respectively.
Zimra Hussain slammed home six majors for the Tigers, while Sophie Hatzismalis and Chloe Jacobs kicked a trio of goals each. On the flipside, Abigail Adams and Lily Tastula were the only goal kickers for the Tahs.
