Magpies swoop into fourth spot

PALMERSTON Magpies locked in their NTFL Women’s Premier Division finals spot with a commanding nine-goal victory over Waratah in the penultimate round. The Magpies burst out of the blocks in the opening term before being pegged back slightly then kicked the only five goals of the second half.

The Magpies kicked 4.3 to 0.0 in the opening term to race out to a 27-point quarter time lead, and though Waratah did chew into the margin slightly by outscoring the black and white in the second term, it would mean little for the end result.

The 21-point half-time lead in favour of the visitors would become 47 by the final break, and in a low-scoring fourth term, the Magpies kicked the sole goal of the period to win, 10.7 (67) to 2.1 (13). The youth of the black and whites had steered them to victory and solidified a top four place and an elimination final against Tiwi Bombers.

Palmerston trio Tatyana Perry, Marika Carlton and Jorja Davey all kicked two goals in the game, with another four individual goalkickers. Carlton and Davey were lively throughout the match and among the best with Ella Ward, while Brittany Daly, Jamilla Cranny and Lilly Rydon stood out for the ‘Tahs.

Around the league, PINT is set to claim another minor premiership with a comprehensive 65-point belting of Tiwi Bombers. The Queen Ants scored 13.10 (88) to 3.5 (23) in Round 17 to end the Bombers’ regular season with a loss.

Boasting a stack of experienced players, Jordan Membrey booted a game-high three goals, with skipper Reni Hicks (two) and ruck Jasmyn Hewett (one) all hitting the scoreboard. Ex-Swans midfielder Paige Sheppard was named best on ground in the victory. For the Bombers, Jelena Tipungwuti booted two goals.

Nightcliff had a dominant win over Darwin Buffettes at TIO Stadium, keeping the losing side to just one behind for the match in the 11-goal triumph. The Tigers got up 10.7 (67) to 0.1 (1) with Cassie McWilliam (three goals), Zimra Hussain (two) and Gracie Roy (two) all starring in front of the big sticks.

In the other game, Southern District smashed Wanderers by 114 points in a bottom two shellacking. The Crocs were inaccurate with 39 scoring shots for 15.24 (114) but kept Wanderers scoreless for the entirety of the match. Eva Harris was best on ground with four goals, while Alessia Smythe also impressed in the victory.
