RMC MEDAL | Pioneer Wright takes early lead

BENDIGO Pioneers captain Hunter Wright has taken an early lead in the Rookie Me Central medal after adding to his three-vote performance in Round 1. The midfielder gathered 23 disposals, 10 clearances and a goal in his side’s five-point win over Murray to stand alone on five votes after two games.

Wright became one of just four players to poll across the first two rounds. Eastern Ranges co-captain Oliver Greeves is his closest competitor on four votes after being beaten to best afield honours by Sandringham key forward Archie Ludowyke, who won his side the game with five goals.

In the same fixture, Dragons midfielder Rory Wright continued to prove he’s made of the right stuff with 21 disposals, seven clearances and a goal. He burst onto the scene in Round 1 to join Greeves and his namesake among the multiple vote-getters, looking every bit a draft prospects.

Essendon Next Generation Academy (NGA) member Hussien El Achkar has also polled across both weeks. The 171cm goalsneak added three goals and two votes to his tally in Calder’s 74-point thumping of Tasmania. Felix Kneipp (26 disposals, five marks) took out the full three votes in that match.

Talls found success throughout the weekend, with over-age Greater Western Victoria forward Floyd Burmeister and Bushrangers spearhead Liam Hetherton both being adjudged best afield. The latter booted five goals, as did Player of the Week Cody Templeton for Gippsland Power.

Along with El Achkar, Collingwood NGA prospect Jai Saxena put his name on the map as a club-tied player in Round 2. He took home the three votes in Oakleigh’s 77-point win over Northern after breaking out with 23 disposals, nine marks and two goals.

Stay tuned, we’ll post the full leaderboard after Round 3.
