Sharks stay on top following victory against Kings

REIGNING premiers Southport Sharks continued their undefeated streak in Round 6 of the 2025 QAFLW season, delivering a compelling 91-point victory over Coorparoo. The Sharks secured their win against the Kings on Saturday afternoon at Fankhauser Reserve, which helped maintain their position at the top of the ladder, with fellow undefeated side and newcomers Morningside close behind.

The clash held added significance as a part of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round, with both sides eager to claim the win on Southport’s home turf. Despite going in as favourites, the Sharks overcame a first half challenge from the Kings to kick away with a massive 10 goals in the second half and post a 14.7 (92) to 0.1 (1) win.

Coorparoo was first on the scoreboard with a behind in the sixth minute, but it was the Sharks that quickly asserted their dominance by slotting two key goals in the first term. Southport’s control and intensity made them clear leaders early in the game. Keely Whittaker kicked off the match for the winners, and was a standout performer throughout.

She kicked two of her three goals in the second half to be the main spearhead up forward. Whittaker also clunked three marks from eight disposals to make the most of her chances inside 50. Southport Sharks vice-captain Tayla Gregory also dominated in her role as a forward/ruck, showing off her agility. Gregory and fellow teammate Maighan Fogas were both named amongst the best players for the match, earning plaudits for their quick and smart gameplay.

Although Kings suffered a disconcerting loss, the team kept up a strong front and did not get dismayed. Mia Teubler was one who stood out for the Kings as a valuable defender, laying a number of strong tackles that forced turnovers. She finished on 14 disposals – seven kicks and seven handballs – and three smart tackles, making her one of Kings’ best players for the game.

Southport Sharks were able to secure their win, cementing their spot at the top of the ladder, further sending a message to the rest of the competition that they are the team to beat in season 2025. They did need to improve on some of their efficiency inside 50, but will look to continue their streak against Maroochydore when the action resumes in two weekend’s time.
