2025 SANFLW Team of the Week: Round 9

WEST Adelaide and South Adelaide’s wins over the weekend earned them equal league-high representation in our SANFL Women’s Round 9 Team of the Week. Both sides had four representatives, one clear of fellow winners North Adelaide and Norwood, while Glenelg and Woodville-West Torrens also had three. Central District and Sturt finished with two apiece.

After a consistent season, West Adelaide midfielder Zoe Venning feasted on Glenelg, producing a dominant best on ground performance with 34 disposals, five marks, three tackles, four clearances, six inside 50s, nine rebound 50s to earn the captaincy for our Team of the Week. Her deputy for Round 9 was North Adelaide’s Jamie Parish who thwarted a stack of Sturt attacks to record 25 disposals, six marks (one contested) and six rebound 50s over the weekend.

Venning is among four Bloods in the side with captain Madi Russell (16 disposals, six marks, six tackles and six rebound 50s) joining Parish in the key defensive posts, while hard-running Lucy Waye and Under 16s debutant Sarah Deed earned spots inside 50. Alongside Parish in defence is the skilful Laela Ebert (23 disposals, four marks, four tackles and two rebound 50s), while a third Roosters defender in Ella Metcalfe earned a place on the interchange.

South Adelaide’s incredible win over previously unbeaten Woodville-West Torrens saw four Panthers make the cut with a number of familiar faces. Ruck Soriah Moon (13 disposals, 10 tackles, 25 hitouts, six. clearances and three inside 50s) narrowly edged out opponent Leah Cutting for the spot in their head-to-head over the weekend, while bottom-age talents Taya Maxwell and Layla Vizgaudis and reliable defender Samantha Pratt.

A trio of Redlegs produced big performances in a breakthrough win over Central District, headlined by Jade Halfpenny (21 disposals, three marks, 11 tackles, five clearances, four inside 50s and two rebound 50s) who while she played midfield, was named at centre half-forward in this side given her versatility and on-ball depth this week. All three Norwood players are inside 50 with Mykaela Walker holding down the other key forward spot, with goal sneak Adrienne Davies next to her, both of whom slotted two goals apiece.

The Redlegs opponents Central District had two representatives with defender Madison Lane (26 disposals, four marks, six tackles and six rebound 50s) and midfielder Tesharna Maher (23 disposals, three marks, six clearances and a goal) both making the side following their big games.

The other side with two representatives was Sturt, with Monique Bessen (27 disposals, nine tackles, six clearances and four rebound 50s) and Isobel Kuiper (25 disposals, two marks, six tackles, 11 clearances and five inside 50s) starring through the middle.

Woodville-West Torrens suffered its first loss of the season, falling short to South Adelaide, but managed three representatives in Christina Leuzzi (22 disposals, nine tackles, eight clearances, five inside 50s and a goal) and Lucy Moore (24 disposals, eight tackles, six clearances and four inside 50s) who both caught the eye through the middle, while skipper Annie Falkenberg was steadfast in defence.

Rounding out the side was a trio of Glenelg talents with star ball-winner Jess Bates named on the bench, but the versatile Asha Dufour sliding out to a wing, with both players combining four 52 disposals, eight marks, nine tackles, 13 clearances and 11 inside 50s. Top-age defender Tessa Davis (26 disposals, six marks (one contested) and seven rebound 50s was the other Bays player in the side.

A fourth Glenelg representative was named as one of the three emergencies in defender Ash Dyer-Pietsch, while games record holder Jaslynne Smith (South Adelaide) and eye-catching midfielder Djimila Totham (North Adelaide) were the others.
