AFLW Academy faces stacked All Stars side
A WOUNDED National Academy side missing a host of young stars will take on a stacked All Stars side at Whitten Oval on Sunday as a glimpse into the future for the national championships. The National Academy easily won the corresponding fixture back in April at RSEA Park, but will miss a handful more players due to injury while the opposition now features the bulk of top-age draft prospects, making for an intriguing contest.
Missing from last time out and will be unavailable again are top stars Ava Usher and Dekota Baron as well as Alira Fotu, while since then the likes of Jade McLay (shoulder) and Evie Cowcher (back) have joined them, with a couple more players in doubt due to niggles they have sustained over the last couple of weeks.
To make up the minimum 23 players for the game, the National Academy has added Nalu Brothwell – sister of current member Mizuki – as another forward target in the match. Meanwhile her partner in crime inside Dandenong Stingrays’ forwardline Evelyn Connolly is among a number of deserved additions to the All Stars squad.
Other additions to the All Stars are South Australian duo Lucy Waye and Imogen Trengove, as well as Swans Academy trio Alex Neyland, Grace Parsons and Kiera Yerbury. Suns Academy duo Sunny Lappin – father-daughter eligible to Carlton and St Kilda – and Rhianna Ingram have also been rewarded for their form with spots.
West Australian Carys D’Addario, GWV Rebels pair Maggie Johnstone and Jovie Skewes-Clinton, and Eastern Ranges utility Asher Fearn-Wannan were the other fresh faces in the All Stars with the sole over-ager being Oakleigh Chargers and Northern Territory defender Tatyana Perry. Also playing in game one, Perry was among a number of 2006-born hopefuls run through the side. With the AFLW lists completed for now, the focus turns to the 2007 draft crop.
