Scouting Notes: 2025 Coates Talent League Girls – Round 15

AFTER a week off, the Coates Talent League Girls commenced its final month of action with plenty of impressive individual performances. As always, we took note of some of those players who caught the eye across the six games.

Notes are the opinion of the individual author, with a focus on state representatives and trailists, as well as non draft-eligible talents.

>> ROUND 15: Round wrap | Team of the Week | Player of the Week

  • Team
  • Western Jets
  • Murray Bushrangers

Western Jets:

#2 Addison West
Midfielder | 166cm | 16/05/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s

The bottom-ager is one player who has caught the eye with some draftable qualities despite still being a touch raw. While her pinpoint precision can definitely improve, her stoppage craft, timing release by hand and explosive speed all point to some key elements that have potential. She used both sides of her body by hand including a mid-air left side handball off a clean take. A big preseason could have her right in the mix as ones to watch next year.

#5 Tayla Olivieri
Midfielder | 159cm | 14/02/2008

Stats: 22 disposals, 15 tackles, 6 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

The Jets have a sneaky good developing crop of bottom-agers who have found form in the second half of the season. Olivieri has been performing consistently for some time and is that tough inside midfielder who does not take a backwards step. Slick with her movement through traffic and boasting quick hands, Olivieri has brilliant defensive traits which are what underpin her game.

#7 Jacinta Eteuati
Defender | 175cm | 27/05/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 6 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s

A player who really caught my attention in the match because at 175cm with some nice athletic traits, Eteuati seemed to get into the right spots to intercept and drive the ball out of the back 50. Granted at times the Murray inside 50s were not always suited to the forwards, but Eteuati did well and pushed up the ground to be on a wing too which could be a role she plays as well. Showed great defensive intent too.

#9 Kiara Boyd
Forward | 173cm | 02/06/2008

Stats: 12 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 2 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Unlike the other Jets bottom-agers in the match, Boyd has been a known quantity for some time since her debut last season. The talented dual-coder might not have hit the scoreboard, but played higher up and was often using her powerful kick to go inside 50. Possesses a nice burst of speed, good overhead – though only rewarded with one mark due to the game – and set up numerous scoring chances.

#30 Alex McBride-Loane
Defender | 174cm | 03/04/2007

Stats: 17 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 1 inside 50

McBride-Loane was a general in defence as usual, but unlike at times where it is her or bust, she had several players – such as Eteuati – who were sharing the intercepting and rebounding duties. McBride-Loane plays with an aggressive style, and in the match her first thought is to switch to the open side and allow a different run of play. Controlled the airways and played her role.

#35 Paige McHutchison
Tall Forward | 174cm | 04/09/2008

Stats: 14 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 2 inside 50s, 2 goals, 1 behind

Yet another bottom-ager who was deserving of a note, McHutchinson played at full-forward and caused all sorts of headaches for the opposition. She is a mobile 174cm tall who plays like a key forward but has clean hands at ground level too. Still developing some fundamentals in her game – such as being nudged under it by the smaller Dodd at one stage – McHutchinson booted two first quarter goals and really should have had three but sprayed a close range set shot into the post.

Murray Bushrangers:

#2 Constance Dodd
Defender | 167cm | 01/03/2008

Stats: 12 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 clearance, 5 rebound 50s

Without older sister Rain in the team, Dodd became the key player rebounding out of the back half, and showed her own traits in doing so. Unsurprisingly like her sister, Dodd has strength and power to break through opponents’ attempted tackles, as well as having a defence-first mindset. Similar athletic principles as well, Dodd just oozes competitiveness.

#10 Sophia Green
Midfielder | 169cm | 22/11/2008

Stats: 19 disposals, 7 tackles, 4 clearances, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Green is one of those players who clearly has enormous talent, and when she is on, she is incredible and hard to stop. There are some games where she will turn the ball over a fair bit – and it did happen again here – but she always possesses determined second efforts to try and win it back, as well as a high-level defensive attitude. Kicked a nice goal seven minutes into the final term which was Murray’s second and last for the match, and showed a nice release by hand throughout.

#14 Ellie Hall
Midfielder | 174cm | 07/07/2006

Stats: 39 disposals, 6 marks, 7 tackles, 8 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Hall’s ridiculous last month and a half continued with another stat-stuffing performance against the Jets. Playing on-ball and then roaming all around the ground, Hall found the pill in each third of the ground and ran opponents off their feet with her elite endurance. She had a really all-round game even kicking a goal in the first term that started with an end-to-end play at half-back. She dished off and essentially ran the length of the field to win it again and throw it on the boot inside 50 to nail the goal. Should be an over-age prospect in consideration.

>> CTL Girls Player Analysis: Ellie Hall (Murray Bushrangers)

#15 Nikhita Spiteri
Forward/Midfielder | 171cm | 20/07/2007

Stats: 22 disposals, 2 marks, 16 tackles, 2 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 behind

It came as no surprise to see Spiteri lay a match-high 16 tackles because that essentially summarises her mindset. A team-first player with a high defensive level, Spiteri looks lively in the front half, and with her pressure enables her to either win holding the ball free kicks, or force turnovers. A brilliant run-down tackle on Olivieri on the wing at one stage was huge, and if that final execution can be tidied up, she ticks a lot of other boxes.

  • Team
  • Gippsland Power
  • Northern Knights

Gippsland Power:

#9 Lily Milner
Forward/Midfielder | 172cm | 25/01/2008

Stats: 13 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50s

One of those players who has a high impact-per-possession game, and this was no different with her balance of offensive and defensive influence on full display. Offensively, Milner used the ball well and linked up effectively both through the corridor and on the wing, and defensively, she produced a couple of great run-down tackles on two of the quicker Knights in Johnson and Meagher. Her technique by foot has always been exquisite, but the accuracy with that execution was on-point in the tight win.

#10 Grace Dillow
Midfielder | 167cm | 03/06/2008

Stats: 21 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 behind

Took control of the midfield and provided that class edge with ball in hand. Dillow has the explosive speed and smarts to be a damaging midfielder, with her work by hand or foot very crucial. Strong overhead for her size, Dillow won the bulk of her touches (68 per cent) in a contest and still ran at over 60 per cent efficiency. Won the most groundballs in her side and set up a couple of scoring opportunities with a ridiculous four centre bounce clearances.

#19 Ella Stoddart
Defender | 174cm | 30/01/2007

Stats: 20 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 4 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Found herself putting one through the big sticks early in the match rather than trying to save them when taking a mark at half-forward and then receiving a 50m penalty. She nailed the set shot well and kicked her first major for the year, before going back into her more familiar defensive role. Pushed up when required, intercepted and roamed across the defensive 50 with her ball use again highly influential.

#24 Baia Pugh
Midfielder | 169cm | 28/03/2007

Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 9 tackles, 7 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal, 1 behind

Pugh has been a fantastic find for Gippsland this year and she was influential working in tandem with Dillow through the middle. Pugh cracked in hard and drove it out of stoppages, usually using it neatly by hand or foot. Another predominant contested ball-winner, Puge spent far more time on-ball than her split forward, and the only downside was getting hurt in some friendly fire from a contest late in the match.

#32 Abby Hobson
Tall Forward | 174cm | 11/09/2007

Stats: 21 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles, 1 hitout, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 2 goals

Cometh the moment, cometh the tall forward, Hobson produced a dominant last quarter after a relatively subdued first three terms. She had a whopping 12 disposals, two marks and two goals to almost single-handedly tear the Knights defence to shreds and drag her side over the line. Always presented and continually looked threatening, but only broke away in the final term to be the difference in the last 20 minutes.

Northern Knights:

#2 Maddison Meagher
Wing | 162cm | 02/08/2008

Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s

A player hard to miss – though you might if you blink – Meagher is one who bursts off half-back to catch the eye, but is gone in a split second once clear and moving the pill to the next player in transition. Her final execution – which is always tricky when you’re travelling like the road runner – can be tidied up, but usually each touch comes with serious meterage and catches the opposition on the hop.

#7 Scarlett Johnson
Wing/Defender | 175cm | 26/11/2007

Stats: 26 disposals, 8 marks, 2 tackles, 3 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 1 behind

There are not too many players who can have the most groundball gets and marks in a match, as well as more contested possessions for her side when playing on a wing role, but that is exactly what you get with Johnson. Clunking two contested marks and doing copious amounts of damage, she was best on ground in a losing side. Johnson’s form in 2025 has been nothing short of sublime, and she racked up 16 disposals and five marks by half-time.

#19 Olivia Jesser
Forward | 168cm | 04/01/2007

Stats: 17 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 1 goal, 1 behind

The most lively Knights forward who worked hard up the ground as well, Jesser returned from Vic Metro duties to play her role and keep popping up in different parts of the ground. Works through traffic effectively and competes in the air, she kicked a brilliant snap around her body early in the second term.

  • Team
  • Calder Cannons
  • Bendigo Pioneers

Calder Cannons:

#8 Taylah Gilcrist
Tall Defender | 177cm | 18/04/2007

Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 4 tackles, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s

Played an aggressive style and could be a little more fluid with her movement given the Cannons had a rare game where they were dominating on the scoreboard. She won most of her touches between the arcs, and often looked to take plenty of grass bursting down the ground. Defensively she was strong once again with a great run-down tackle at half-back midway through the third term.

#15 Shauna McElligott
Forward/Midfielder | 162cm | 05/03/2007

Stats: 21 disposals, 4 marks, 9 tackles, 1 clearance, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal, 1 behind

Not quite as damaging by hand or foot as she can be, but also played a more predominant contested role where she won double-digit groundballs and laid nine tackles. She was a key link between the midfield and attack, often getting the ball forward to try and create scoring opportunities for her team.

#22 Felicity Mahoney
Midfielder | 173cm | 20/7/2008

Stats: 18 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 5 clearances, 2 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Against a quality midfield, Mahoney was the most consistent Cannons midfielder and quite clean on the inside and able to extract the ball out of congestion. She did just that and got ball to boot not far from goal midway through the third term to put one through the big sticks, in what was otherwise a reliable two-way midfield role.

#51 Lily Frangoulis
Small Forward | 152cm | 20/04/2008

Stats: 18 disposals, 2 marks, 7 tackles, 4 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 behind

The bottom-age pocket rocket made her debut and she is one of those players who brings electric energy inside 50. The knock going forward will be her height, but donning the long sleeves, Frangoulis latches onto opponents and does not let them go, unluckily not rewarded with a goal when given a chance with the shot hitting the post on the way through. An energiser bunny of sorts.

Bendigo Pioneers:

#1 Georgia Garlick
Defender/Midfielder | 169cm | 01/07/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 4 rebound 50s

The smooth-moving left-footer provided nice rebound and clean hands out of defence, able to navigate her way through traffic. She rotated between half-back and on-ball where she does her best work with space in front of her. At times under pressure she can turn the ball over, but her run in transition and willingness to take the game on is crucial.

#2 Olivia Lacy
Midfielder/Defender | 169cm | 15/06/2007

Stats: 24 disposals, 2 marks, 10 tackles, 6 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Starting on-ball then rotating into defence, Lacy goes about her business with minimal fuss and is usually a key cog feeding the ball out to her teammates. Along with Morris, Lacy is a first-possession winner at the coalface, but is an effective user of the ball as well, which is why when coming out of defence she is a player to utilise. Laid 10 tackles and had six clearances among her 24 disposals.

#5 Ava Bibby
Ruck/Forward | 186cm | 09/05/2007

Stats: 11 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 21 hitouts, 2 clearances, 1 rebound 50

Returning from injury, Bibby started up forward then with limited opportunity moved into the ruck where she got her hands on it far more. While still rusty from having been out for so long, the towering key utility did work into the game nicely and her ruck work in particular was strong. There might have been some worries when copping an accidental knee to the stomach in a ruck contest but she did come back on to play up forward and take a mark shortly after.

#9 Beth Morris
Midfielder | 167cm | 04/09/2008

Stats: 26 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 7 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

A real figurehead on-ball, Morris is a see-ball, get-ball player and influential around the stoppages. A team-high 11 groundballs as well as nine handball receives, Morris has that balance of ball-winning on the inside, and outside. Her use by hand is the more effective mode of disposal, and there were a few times where she linked up nicely and played a key role. Shaping up as a well-rounded bottom-age Pioneers midfield next season.

#14 Lacey Nihill
Midfielder | 172cm | 01/05/2008

Stats: 30 disposals, 5 marks, 6 tackles, 5 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Nihill is a similar player to Milner in the sense that technically she has fluent work around the ball or on the outside, but it is just transitioning that technical side to be pinpoint. Though her efficiency was down, it always feels like her impact is high because she runs hard, tackles well and transitions the ball consistently. Clean at ground level, she can weight her kicks and spread effectively, with the ability to play just about any role on the ground. Definitely a player to watch for next season.

#23 Ella Jeffrey
Defender/Midfielder | 167cm | 09/08/2007

Stats: 29 disposals, 5 marks, 10 tackles, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Having a really good year and getting better as it goes along, Jeffrey has found that rotating niche between defence and midfield where often she is mopping up on the last line or taking kickouts, then going into centre bounces as she did in the second half. No problems finding the ball, Jeffrey uses the ball effectively with her short, sharp passes focused on ball retention more often than not. On the occasion she does make an error, she is usually following up to apply pressure and win the ball back for her team. Super strong and competitive in both the air and at ground level.

  • Team
  • Oakleigh Chargers
  • Dandenong Stingrays

Oakleigh Chargers:

#2 Chloe Thorn
Midfielder | 167cm | 07/09/2007

Stats: 24 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 3 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Coming off a successful campaign for Vic Metro, Thorn moved back into the midfield – a role she has played over the past two years – and showed she could still make an impact there. She is defensively minded, tough and loves a good tackle, as well as as being clean at ground level and happy to distribute to others. Working in tandem with Bown, Thorn acted as the first possession winner alongside Murtic and Mazzei, but also worked into space to be a well-balanced outside player too.

#5 Isabelle Godfrey
Wing | 162cm | 11/08/2008

Stats: 15 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal

Speaking of outside, Godfrey breaks the mould for the predominant Oakleigh inside bulls being by a specialist winger. A developing type with some eye-catching traits, her slick sidestep along with her ability to spread into space on the turnover, stands out in her game. The way Godfrey changes direction on a dime is sublime and she was rewarded for her hard running with a goal in the dying moments of the match.

#9 Chloe Bown
Midfielder | 173cm | 20/12/2007

Stats: 32 disposals, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 5 clearances, 10 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 behind

Thrived by being that last chain of possession out of the midfield and being able to roam around and win the ball at will. She earned our Rookie Me Central Player of the Week for her performance, and while she did not need to win as many groundballs, Bown read the ball either off hands or anticipating the play via a teammate to move the ball quickly down the field and set up scoring changes. Her explosive burst sets her apart.

Isabella Mazzei has had a really impressive bottom-age season for the Chargers. Image credit: Rookie Me Central

#11 Isabella Mazzei
Midfielder | 170cm | 06/06/2008

Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 8 clearances, 1 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s

The tough and clean inside midfielder has some great stoppage IQ and courage that helps her be a see-ball, get-ball type. Competitive overhead, Mazzei’s best work is still done at ground level where she fires out handballs to her teammates and tries to break up the congestion. The dominant clearance player on the day, Mazzei worked hard to roll back behind the ball and assist in tandem with Thorn and Murtic.

#18 Bailee Martin
Forward | 176cm | 06/06/2008

Stats: 11 disposals, 1 mark, 1 hitout, 2 inside 50s, 3 goals, 3 behinds

The competition leading goalkicker only claimed one mark, but continually was infringed to stop her doing so, which resulted in Martin receiving five free kicks. Three goals is considered a quiet day for the talented bottom-ager, but she was very clearly a name that the Stingrays had circled as one to stop, but she still booted multiple majors and had a hand in others, while missing a few she should kick.

#26 Teagan Murtic
Defender/Midfielder | 169cm | 22/10/2007

Stats: 28 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 6 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Spent time at full-back for Vic Metro and also found herself in defence at times when not around the ball in the match. She finds the ball consistently, and her clean hands and timing release stands out with Murtic’s outside game an element that has improved this year. Perhaps not the same polish by foot as others, Murtic is effective in the way she plays because she opts for the percentages and can win her own ball or be the next one up to release a teammate into the clear.

#40 Jessica Owen
Ruck | 191cm | 07/12/2006

Stats: 10 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 24 hitouts, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Coming back from a two-game stint with the Allies, Owen controlled the ruck battle against a bottom-age Vic Country opponent and found a little more of the ball around the ground too. She is usually a good target between the arcs or at the stoppages, but worked into the 50s as well and also put pressure on the opposition following her hitouts.

Dandenong Stingrays:

#5 Mizuki Brothwell
Defender | 175cm | 22/10/2007

Stats: 18 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 6 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Played a key role coming out of defence, trying to play a higher half-back position which was effective for the most part. Oakleigh only kicked away in the final term, and by avoiding Brothwell had an easier time of getting it inside 50. A brilliant first half saw the National Academy member have 12 disposals and three marks in the half, while continually being an option on the outside.

#10 Matilda Argus
Midfielder/Defender | 166cm | 08/01/2007

Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 5 clearances, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Runs hard whether on-ball or off half-back and got reward for effort during the third term when she slotted a great goal from 30m out. She immediately went into the middle after that and showed her centre stoppage craft throughout the game with two centre bounce clearances among five in total. Only laid the one tackle but applied pressure and was usually the player to release into space and use her speed to inflict maximum damage.

#11 Scarlett Marsh
Defender/Midfielder | 162cm | 03/04/2008

Stats: 13 disposals, 1 mark, 6 tackles, 1 clearance, 3 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Rolled between her trusty defence as well as midfield and found her fair share of the ball. One of the more damaging ball users, she found the going a little tougher given the added pressure, but still made her presence felt and took a great contested mark too. Went back to help the defence and take kickouts in the final term, amassing six of her 13 touches in the final 20 minutes.

#12 Alice Cunnington
Forward/Midfielder | 174cm | 30/06/2008

Stats: 18 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 2 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal, 1 behind

Did not get a help of looks playing forward but still spent some time through the middle where she looked to utilise her pace. An eight-disposal fourth term playing on-ball showed she can find it around the stoppages and still managed to hit the scoreboard just before the three quarter time siren by working into the right spot for a major.

  • Team
  • GWV Rebels
  • Tasmania Devils

GWV Rebels:

#1 Isabella Davies
Midfielder/Defender I 162cm I 29/10/2006

Stats: 32 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 7 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Davies returned from her VFLW stint to pick up where she left off and looked too experienced for a young Tasmanian Devils outfit. She brought her own ball with her and by half-time had accumulated 20 disposals on track for another 40 like she had earlier in the season. The conditions were terrible given the state of the muddy ground, but the over-ager thrived. Whether it was winning the ball at ground level or in transition, she did it all and allowed others to shine at the same time.

#7 Maggie Johnstone
Midfielder/Forward I 171cm I 06/06/2007

Stats: 25 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Took control early and seemed to get better as teh game went on before rotating forward late in the fourth term. She held her positioning out of the middle well, sometimes intercepting at half-forward or getting into space to win multiple possessions going forward, but still had the defensive mindset to aid the backs too. There was a slightly nervous moment where in the last couple of minutes she and Skewes-Clinton crashed into each other in a marking contest, but both dusted themselves off and were fine.

#9 Jovie Skewes-Clinton
Tall Forward I 176cm I 15/11/2007

Stats: 24 disposals, 2 marks, 8 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 inside 50s, 3 goals, 1 behind

Got her opportunity as a full-time forward rather than being thrown from end-to-end, and thrived with a nice 20-plus disposal and three-goal game. The one she missed seemed the easier of the lot from just 15m out so it really should have been four goals, but most of the time if the Vic Country representative got a sniff, she was ready to punish the opposition. A very impressive game and was a focal point inside 50.

#17 Milly Shortal
Midfielder | 175cm | 24/06/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 2 tackles, 4 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal

With the return of the three above players, Shortal gained a little bit of freedom through the middle and bathed in plenty of space to use her explosive speed and booming kick. Perfectly suited to the conditions, Shortal won the first centre clearance and continued to crack in across the four quarters being a highly contested ball-winner. She earned reward for her efforts with a classy finish on goal in the last five minutes of the third term.

Milly Shortal is a name to keep an eye on for next year. Image credit: Rookie Me Central

#19 Lila Evans
Forward | 166cm | 30/04/2008

Stats: 14 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal

The bottom-age forward caught the eye in the game with her ability to both apply pressure and also work up the ground and win the ball for her team. She hit the scoreboard early in the third term which was a just reward, while also setting up numerous teammates inside 50. Has some promising traits to build upon coming into her top-age season in 2026.

#32 Jayda Wright
Forward | 167cm | 20/12/2009

Stats: 10 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 1 goal, 3 behinds

There was a fair bit of bad luck associated with Wright’s scoreboard attempts, kicking a goal out in front midway through the third term before having multiple changes that only just missed. Whether it hit the post, just took a wrong bounce or was touched on the line, Wright genuinely could have kicked five goals on the day such was her influence. Though not taxing the opposition the full toll, she still showed promising signs as an Under 16s representative making her way at Under 18s level.

Tasmania Devils:

#11 Lucah Conkie
Midfielder | 167cm | 06/09/2007

Stats: 18 disposals, 2 marks, 10 tackles, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

The next best Devil outside of Ward on the day, Conkie lead Tasmania out and showed she can play a full game through the middle. Known for her intercepting abilities off half-back, Conkie got her opportunity on-ball with a host of teammates out due to Allies and went about her business putting her body on the line. While her efficiency could have been better, the conditions made it a nightmare and was consistently putting in second and third efforts to win the ball back for her side.

#16 Evie Ward
Midfielder | 171cm | 29/10/2008

Stats: 34 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 9 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s

In a stat-stuffing performance, Ward is another player who got her full-time midfield gig and took it with both hands, racking up a match-high 34 touches, and a competition season-high 30 contested possessions. She won 25 groundballs in the process and was an enormous first-possession winger doing everything in her power to bomb the ball forward. Ward did often just throw it on the boot to fain distance, but all things considered, that was the measured move.

  • Team
  • Eastern Ranges
  • Sandringham Dragons

Eastern Ranges:

#4 Asher Fearn-Wannan
Wing | 177cm | 14/12/2007

Stats: 15 disposals, 3 tackles, 1 clearance, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 behind

Fearn-Wannan played her usual hard-running role often mopping up behind the ball and then taking off and impacting on transition. She was strong early in the match to win a holding the ball free on Watkins, and even had a long-range shot on goal that just bounced to the left for a behind. Showed her huge tank by running out the four quarters well and contributed consistently between the arcs.

#12 Emily Rankin
Midfielder | 166cm | 11/05/2008

Stats: 22 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 5 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Often playing a team-first role and being a quick dish-off by hand type player, Rankin showed some of her outstanding athletic traits and ability to clear the ball not just off the first split second, but with a sidestep or burst forward then disposing. That separation enabled her to be highly damaging by foot, with 11 of her 13 kicks deemed effective. Rankin’s sole shot on goal was rushed across teh line in the fourth term, but while she had the class factor down pat, she also got her hands dirty and laid some bruising tackles too.

#17 Lara Williams
Defender | 169cm | 29/08/2008

Stats: 13 disposals, 5 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s

Williams’ versatility has been on show this season and particularly when her top-age teammates have missed due to Vic Metro representation. Playing off half-back once again and pushing up into the middle, Williams has nice skills and good footy smarts that enable her to impact games by getting into the right spots and making good decisions by hand or foot. She set up a goal to Briannan Lambe with a lovely weighted kick to the goalsquare midway through the third term, and did spend time around the stoppages as well.

#35 Brylee Anderson
Midfielder | 172cm | 25/03/2008

Stats: 25 disposals, 2 marks, 9 tackles, 9 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Another industrious performance from one of the top Victorian prospects in next year’s draft. Taking the reins in the middle after spending time forward for Vic Metro in the last match, Anderson just consistently finds the ball in any given situation. Her 10-disposal second term was a highlight, though even when she wasn’t winning it, she was looking like winning it. Cracked in for an enormous 19 contested possessions as well.

#54 Zoe Wilkinson
Midfielder | 170cm | 17/05/2007

Stats: 12 disposals, 6 tackles, 5 clearances, 3 inside 50s

Did not win a stack of it, but was highly effective in the moments she did win it, running at 75 per cent disposal efficiency despite almost all of her touches being under immense pressure. While she often gets forward to impact the scoreboard, she did a lot of great work behind the ball to set others up and did well with her two-way running throughout the contest.

Sandringham Dragons:

#2 Grace McIntyre
Wing | 172cm | 31/12/2008

Stats: 16 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50

The bottom-age wing runs all day and enjoyed the open spaces of Box Hill City Oval by putting on the jets a few times. If the centre stoppages were congested, she would dash in from a wing to wait for the spill and then take off. While her kicking is an area to still develop, she produced a nice weighted kick to Sharp for a shot on goal early in the match.

#10 Macy Watkins
Midfielder | 172cm | 24/05/2007

Stats: 25 disposals, 2 marks, 7 tackles, 6 clearances, 2 rebound 50s, 1 behind

Goes about her business unassumingly and just gets the job done each and every week. Watkins is a well-balanced midfielder who though has always been a great defensive player, has added an offensive element to her game in 2025. While not perfectly clean in the conditions, her second and third efforts enable her to stick to the task, and she was a prominent ball-winner around the coalface and in making her teammates better.

#24 Claudia Kogler
Midfielder | 172cm | 03/04/2009

Stats: 22 disposals, 6 tackles, 6 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 1 behind

Rode shotgun with Watkins on-ball and was equally balanced between her defensive and offensive traits. Kogler is only an Under 16s prospect but with a nice burst and an ability to pick the right exit out of a stoppage, there is much excitement internally about what she could develop into. The ball-winning midfielder’s clean hands and timing release in traffic are a couple of key traits, and she was consistent across four quarters. However her day did end on a concerning not, hobbling off in the last four minutes.

#28 Amy Smith
Wing | 172cm | 07/11/2007

Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal

Has made the wing her home of late for the Dragons and though she is capable of playing on any line, Smith’s running capacity and elite kicking skills allow her to do a lot of damage when getting forward of centre. One such play in the first term saw her deliver a pinpoint kick off a step to half-forward then worked inside 50 to mark uncontested and nail the subsequent set shot from 20m out on a slight angle.

#39 Chloe Williams
Tall Defender | 175cm | 23/04/2008

Stats: 21 disposals, 8 marks, 4 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 6 rebound 50s

Arguably best-on with her impact out of defence and thwarting Eastern Ranges’ attempts time and time again. She was influential in the air and even dropped a few she could have taken, but once she had ball in hand, used it effectively down the ground. Reads the play supremely well and is composed with ball in hand too. Continued to spread throughout the match and was a key player for the Dragons. A highly promising bottom-ager.

#44 Sienna Sharp
Tall Forward | 177cm | 30/09/2007

Stats: 16 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 2 hitouts, 3 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 goal, 2 behinds

Looked in for a big game early when having target practice throughout the first term kicking a goal and a couple of behinds while also pumping it deep to keep the pressure on the Ranges defence. Though that goal was her sole major for the match, Sharp worked up the ground consistently and did well in finding space and being a marking option for her teammates on transition. Leads by example and was a key figure in the front half.

#59 Maya Duane
Midfielder/Forward | 180cm | 16/03/2009

Stats: 11 disposals, 1 mark, 1 tackle, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal

The Under 16s jet did not have the same influence she has had without her older teammates there, but Duane still catches the eye with her ability to look like something magical is about to happen. Whether it is winning clearances around the stoppages or getting close to goal and being able to slam home majors from long-range on the run or impossible angles, Duane just has that X-factor about her.
