2025 AFLW Team Preview: Collingwood

IT WAS a season to forget for the Magpies in 2024 as Collingwood slumped to its first women’s wooden spoon and only third in complete club history. The benefit was picking up generational talent Ash Centra with pick one, who will change the delivery inside 50 which was Collingwood’s Achilles heel last year. Her inclusion alone should see the Pies far better in 2025, and with a very soft draw, should notch up some additional wins.

ONES TO WATCH

Key Player: Brianna Davey
Breakout Potential: Georgia Clark
New Recruit: Ash Centra

While currently injured, having a player of Brianna Davey makes her side better so a fully-fit Davey around a host of fresh faces on-ball will only make the Pies stronger. One such player will be Ash Centra with the number one pick set to be the best kick in the team – and arguably the league – from day dot which separates her from any players prior. If they can get the ball in her hands going forward, then the Pies forwards will be licking their lips. One such forward who was limited for opportunities is Tasmanian Georgia Clark who has velcro hands and is a reliable set shot for goal and should be the answers to the Pies’ scoring woes.

PREDICTION

Collingwood’s sole goal for 2025 will be to show improvement on last year’s one-win season. Given they do not travel outside Victoria until Round 8 – and only travel twice and to the lowest ranked interstate teams for last year – to say their fixture is kind is an understatement. They still face some big challenges against last year’s grand finalists, but realistically should be able to notch up a few wins at a minimum. Finals are probably a little bit out of reach, but competitiveness and ticking over some victories is key for the black and whites.
