2025 CTLG Team Review: Tasmania Devils

WHILE playing one less game than the rest of the competition, Tasmania Devils showed that when their best possible side was on the park, they could beat some quality teams with wins over a host of top sides including Oakleigh, Dandenong and Gippsland.

BEST PERFORMANCE

Round 8: def. Dandenong Stingrays by 1 point

In one of the upsets of the season to that point, Dandenong Stingrays – who had crushed a lot of teams – went down to the Devils in their first defeat. While Tasmania had bigger wins – such as the 84-5 shellacking of Gippsland Power – the victory over the Stingrays – who loom as a title contender – at Shepley Oval was a day to remember.

DRAFT PROSPECTS

NATIONAL DRAFT COMBINE

Mia Anderson (Clarence)
Midfielder | 171cm | 14/02/2007

Stats [10 games]: 21.3 disposals, 2.1 marks, 3.3 hitouts, 3.6 tackles, 3.5 clearances, 3.5 inside 50s, 1.4 rebound 50s, 6 goals

One of the big improvers in her top-age season, Anderson went from being a strong inside ball-winner to having serious impact in transition and on the outside. She hit the scoreboard for both the Devils and Allies, and that development in her game from being purely inside to a really well-balanced midfielder took her to another level. She now looms as a natural ball-winner with some nice tricks, and deservedly grabbed a National Draft Combine invite.

Mischa Barwin (Lauderdale)
Forward/Midfielder | 167cm | 04/12/2007

Stats [9 games]: 19.8 disposals, 3.9 marks, 5.8 tackles, 2.6 clearances, 3.6 inside 50s, 7 goals

One of two Tasmanians tipped to go in teh first round, Barwin has the evasive skills and smarts to do a lot of damage in a high half-forward role. While at times she can do a tend too much, her high risk-high reward gamestyle means she can inflict a lot of pain on the opposition when it comes off. Backing herself consistently to sidestep others or breakthrough tackles, she does well in any role be it forward, on-ball or even the wing as she did for the Allies.

Priya Bowering (Lauderdale)
Midfielder | 169cm | 02/01/2007

Stats [9 games]: 20.4 disposals, 3.1 marks, 4.8 tackles, 5.0 clearances, 4.6 inside 50s, 1.9 rebound 50s, 2 goals

The National Academy member continued her remarkable few seasons through the Devils and Allies programs, winning an MVP at the national championships to go with All-Australian honours alongside Barwin. She is one of those absolute locks in terms of what you come to expect, with her ball-winning ability, leadership, footy IQ and strength all outstanding. Against Western Australia, Bowering loomed as that ‘jump on my shoulders I’ll lead the way’ type of special talent.

STATE DRAFT COMBINE

Harriet Bingley (Old Scotch Collegians)
Forward/Midfielder | 174cm | 23/03/2007

Stats [9 games]: 15.4 disposals, 2.3 marks, 4.3 tackles, 1.4 clearances, 2.3 inside 50s, 9 goals

A strong target inside 50, Bingley has found her best role as that marking forward who can pinch hit through the middle and provide a bigger body around the stoppages. At 174cm she is that inbetween height of the two roles, and is a fierce, aggressive player at ground level too. She booted a goal a game for the Devils, and was able to draw opponents away from others given her strength in the air. Also represented the All-Stars against the National Academy on both occasions.

Ava Read (Clarence)
Tall Utility | 179cm | 21/06/2006

Stats [12 games]: 16.2 disposals, 4.0 marks, 3.4 tackles, 2.3 clearances, 1.8 inside 50s, 4.8 rebound 50s, 8 goals

After winning the Coates Talent League Girls leading goalkicker award last season, Read slotted into defence with ease to start the year, while having the odd quarter here or there up forward. In the end, she still booted eight goals, but her intercepting work behind the ball stood out. Developing her game well, she earned a call-up to the Allies for a couple of matches too, and was able to further stake her draft claims to earn a combine invitation.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

Tasmania’s top prospect next season is Evie Ward who showed some nice progression, particularly in the absence of the combine invitees due to Allies duties. She can play just about anywhere and is one to note down for next year, with Evie Bingham the other player to keep in mind as a bottom-ager. She is not a massive ball-winner but does some nice things behind the ball.

Small forward Stevie-Lee Johns and midfielder/forward Annabella Burt were regulars in teh side from a 2008-born perspective, while the 2009-born crop is promising. Star midfielder Matilda Lange is emerging as one of the best talents in the 2027 AFLW Draft, and will be the key onballer next year leading the side as a bottom-ager. Tall forward/ruck Luca Murgatroyd and ruck Imogen Verdouw both had their moments of brilliance coming into the Under 18s side.
