2025 AFLW Draft review: Geelong

IN TERMS of value, Geelong’s haul was one of the best in the AFLW Draft, scooping up two potential top 10 players – and first round locks – with top 30 selections, while also adding another readymade midfielder early in the third round.

Geelong will have walked away from the 2025 AFLW Draft rubbing their hands having picked up two Round 1 starters and meeting crucial needs for the club which will look to move back up the ladder. Tall intercepting defender Cowcher missed the best part of 2025, but her CV over the last couple of years is nothing short of sensational.

She fits a perfect need for the Cats who struggled more defensively than in the past, and with some retirements and a developing young backline being regenerated, Cowcher can slot straight into that. Between her and Sienna Tallariti, the Cats have picked up a couple of sublime readers of the play who can intercept on the regular. Given she was touted as high as Pick 5, nabbing the Peel Thunder jet at 11 was brilliant business.

Then came the Tasmanian slider in the form of Bowering who was the last of the AFLW Draft night invitees to come off the board. In a real head scratcher, the readymade, well-balanced midfielder had to wait until Pick 27 to hear her name read out before being able to join in the celebrations. She is powerful around the ball, a clearance beast and has the untapped athleticism that is rare for a player of her frame and contested ability.

Completing the Cats’ lineup for 2025 was another West Australian in Morgan who is close friends with Cowcher and will join her mate at the Cattery in 2026. Morgan is also predominantly an inside midfielder who is just as readymade as the others, so if a spot is available in Round 1 she is more than able to take it. While still working on the athletic side of her game, Morgan’s dualsidedness and natural smarts shine through, with some great skills and hardness at the contest.

GRADE: A+

Breaking the trend of a lot of other clubs, Geelong picked up readymade players who are just great natural footballers. They are smart, read the play well and get the job done week in, week out. They fill needs for the Cats, and at the picks they were taken represent great value. A top draft haul.
