2025 AFLW Draft review: Hawthorn
HAWTHORN essentially removed itself from the 2025 AFLW Draft and then with its two picks, selected a couple of unknowns who could prove to be shrewd calls. The Hawks made the minimum two selections and picked up a couple of cross-coders with another Irishwoman and a father-daughter basketballer brought onto the list.

DRAFT HAUL
Pick 51. Hannah Looney
Pick 57. Maya Dear
Hawthorn pulled the surprise of the night by plucking out 28-year-old Looney with Pick 51, an explosive athlete who has played both Gaelic football and camogie, and was one of the best players in the latter sport. Looney is regraded as a strong competitor with a penetrating kick that will come in handy, and while completely raw in terms of Australian rules football, does have experience and natural athleticism on her side.
Looney stands at 173cm and will likely be trialed across a few different roles over the preseason to see where she fits, much like Hawthorn’s second selection, Dear. The 21-year-old is the sister of current Hawk Calsher and the daughter of the late Paul, a Norm Smith Medallist with the brown and gold in the 1991 grand final.
She becomes Hawthorn’s first ever father-daughter selection, but also comes without any Aussie rules experience. Dear comes out of the NBL1 where she has spent time with Sandringham Sabres, while also has a netball background too. At 176cm, she is a good size and her overall strength and power will hold her in good stead for the Hawks.
GRADE: N/A
It is only fair not to grade Hawthorn on the draft simply because there is not exposed form for either of the players. As they were likely the only club targeting these specific players, it made sense why the Hawks opted to look to next year’s AFLW Draft instead, as they eye off another finals appearance next season. Given both selections were late in the draft, it is a low-risk, high-reward pair of picks.
