Tasmania confirms inaugural VFLW squad

TASMANIA Devils have locked in their VFL Women’s squad for the upcoming 2026 season, confirming the 38-player roster via Instagram yesterday. The squad will feature a host of local players including ex-AFLW talents who are returning to state league level, as well as some interstate draft hopefuls from across the country.

The Devils announced they would provide two players with a ‘golden ticket’ into the AFL Women’s with a couple of state league prospects being chosen to represent the state and club at the elite level when the team enters the competition in 2028. It means players have two years to show their wares in the competition ahead of the historic day.

Among the higher profile names are ex-AFL players who initially hailed from the Apple Isle including Ella Maurer (North Melbourne and Gold Coast), Georgia Clark (Collingwood), Gabbi Featherston (Geelong), Sarah Skinner (North Melbourne and Sydney), Meghan Gaffney (GWS Giants) and former Roos, Perri King and Libby Haines.

Recent Coates Talent League Girls graduates Lucah Conkie, Ava Read and Taia Lette are among the younger members of the squad, while local stars such as Brieanna Barwick and Jacinta Limbrick ensure the homegrown flavour stretches far and wide. The young interstate talent is headlined by the likes of Ellie Hall (Murray Bushrangers/Giants Academy/Allies), Alicia Gordon (Southport/Suns Academy/Queensland) and Matilda Elbourne (Giants Academy/Allies).

The opening round 2026 VFLW season will be played the weekend of May 16-17. The VFLW home and away season will feature 16 rounds, with all 13 clubs to play 14 regular season matches and have two byes. The updated season timing will now see the final three rounds of the VFLW home-and-away season crossover with the opening three rounds of the AFLW competition.

The top-six teams on the VFLW ladder will qualify for finals, with the finals series to change to a three-week format. The finals series will commence with two elimination finals on the weekend of September 5-6. The third-placed team on the ladder will play against sixth, while fourth will take on fifth.

The top two teams on the ladder will have a bye during the elimination finals weekend and will advance directly to the preliminary finals, where the first-placed team will play the lower-ranked elimination final winner, while the second-placed team will take on the higher-ranked elimination final winner.

The two preliminary final winners will advance to the VFLW Grand Final, which will be on the same weekend as the Smithy’s VFL Grand Final.
