Record-breaking Roche headlines huge AFLW Draft Combine results

MURRAY Bushrangers forward Eliza Roche blitzed the agility test record by 0.57 tenths of a second after an elite performance at Saturday’s AFLW Draft Combine. Speaking to Rookie Me Central the day before the testing, Roche said she was gunning for a score “between 8.2 to 8.4”, but instead finished the course in an incredible 8.106, surpassing Lavinia Cox’s 2024 record of 8.163 seconds.

That score was not the only eye-catching run by Roche, who clocked under her hoped 3.2-second aim in the 20-metre sprint with a 3.126-second performance. That effort earned her a clear second to only Northern Knights speedster Maddison Meagher. The Vic Metro winger was favourite to clock the fastest time and she certainly did that, rapidly recording a 3.059-second time to finish second all-time in the test. Sydney Swans Academy’s Evie Bowie (3.174 seconds) finished third ahead of Gippsland Power’s Lily Milner who was the other player to clock sub-3.2 seconds.

Meanwhile in the agility, Meagher finished fourth overall with a sub 8.2-second run (8.191 seconds), with Vic Metro teammate Kiara Boyd (8.176 seconds) narrowly pipping Emma Charlton (8.177 seconds) by one hundredth of a second. The Northern Knights talent won the vertical jump (61cm) to show she has plenty of hops to match her speed, while registering equal third in the running vertical jump (72cm) with fellow Northern prospect Alli Allen.

West Perth’s Cara Dziegielewski won the running vertical jump with a leap of 75cm, one centimetre ahead of Giants Academy athlete Morgan Stevens, while Central District’s Miyu Endersby (71cm) finished fifth. Boyd, Stevens, Dziegielewski and Roche rounded out the top five in the vertical jump with the group having an eye-catching day.

The girls’ time trial was reduced from 2km to 1.6km this year and held last Tuesday, though the winner came as no surprise. Oakleigh Chargers endurance machine Sophia Green – clocked a pace-setting time of 5:27, to hold off her nearest rivals in Geelong Falcons’ Greea McKeegan (5:33) and Aurelia Russell (5:34) who finished on the podium, while South Australian duo Emily Mableson and Georgie Fielder rounded out the top five.
