SNAPSHOT: “A tough and clean inside midfielder who developed her forward craft in 2025 to be an intriguing AFLW Draft prospect.”

Zoe Wilkinson had a really consistent year for Eastern Ranges this year, starting on-ball then adding a forward element to her game. That versatility enabled her to play a role for Vic Metro rather than try and squeeze into a stacked midfield, and she gave a great sight into what she could become at the next level with a well-balanced game.

Wilkinson has been joined on her footballing journey by twin Mathilde, who equally played through the Eastern Ranges’ season, winning a flag together. While Mathilde was one of the unlucky ones to miss out on Metro selection and a Draft Combine invite, Zoe ticked both those boxes and finished the year on a high.

Going back to the beginning, Wilkinson has been playing football for more than a decade, with her first season out at Emerald in the Outer East Football League way back in 2015. Prior to the global pandemic, Wilkinson had played 68 games of junior football for the Bombers. Like many across the country and particularly Victoria, Wilkinson sat out 2020, but returned to take up a spot with Lysterfield in the South Belgrave Lysterfield Wolves side in 2021.

She played 11 games – including one for the Under 16s – and booted 13 goals, while getting to represent the Eastern Football Netball League. The step up in quality did not phase Wilkinson, who cemented her spot in the Under 16s the following season, and again ran out for the interleague team. Though still developing in 2023, Wilkinson made her debut for Eastern Ranges via the Futures squad, before heading back to play with the Wolves, and making her senior debut at 16.

Finally cracking in for her Under 18s debut at Eastern Ranges the following season, Wilkinson averaged 8.9 disposals and 3.8 tackles, having had to overcome injury interruptions that impacted her year. Fit and firing over the off-season coming into her top-age campaign, Wilkinson fulfilled her potential playing every game she could for Eastern – 15 – and averaged 12.4 disposals, 3.7 tackles and booted nine goals transitioning into a forward.

In the same vein, she played there for Vic Metro and managed to hit the scoreboard, while recording seven disposals and laying three tackles per match across the four games. Her season earned the 170cm midfielder-forward a State Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

+ Contested work
+Decision making
+ Versatility
+ Clean hands
+ Scoreboard impact
+ Footy IQ
+ Competitiveness

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Overhead marking
- Kicking under pressure
- Production

Wilkinson's draft profile is an interesting one. The gap between her best traits and biggest improvements is not that large, because as a whole, she has a well-rounded game. While still having a couple of big weapons, most of her traits are either good or really solid to build upon, or needing improvement, but not major deficiencies.

Starting with her major weapons, Wilkinson's contested game and everything that comes with it, is a clear advantage. She thrives on the contest, has a healthy competitive nature, wins stacks of groundballs, and is clean by hand around the coalface. Her ability to go in, grab the loose ball and dish off makes her a valuable player to her teammates, and usually she is making the right decision as well.

Though primarily a contested ball-winner, Wilkinson is capable of getting into space and winning it there, though a lot of that time was spent forward, when she rotated inside 50. Her ability to transition into that role to aid her draft chances was very good, especially given the depth of quality even at the Ranges through the middle.

When around the ball, Wilkinson feeds it effectively to her teammates and can bring them into the game, not afraid to spin one way then the other. Her athletic profile is one of those aforementioned areas that is pretty solid, can improve, but is not a deficiency. She is not explosive by any means, but moves well enough and has the smarts to evade would-be tacklers while having an alright tank, which again could develop.

With ball in hand, Wilkinson is a clean user, with her hands elite. She rarely misses a handball even under pressure, and while being tackled at ground level, the midfielder can usually find a target free in a quick time. Her decision making is very good, and that goes for her kicking as well. She can work out of contests, spread forward and use the ball fairly well. Perhaps winning more of the ball is a way to further develop, averaging a little below most even with the dual role or when forward.

Her kicking is another interesting aspect. Technique wise, Wilkinson is great, and with time and space - say after a mark - she uses her vision and decision making to pick out the right option and deliver lace-out going forward. The area for improvement in her game is when she is on the move, particularly under pressure. In those instances, she tends to rush the ball drop a little more than with time, and ends up still going to the right areas, but not as clinical or precise.

That is a perfect example of an improvement that is not so much a deficiency, but definitely a way she can develop. On top of that, her overhead marking is an area she can build on, with Wilkinson comfortable taking the ball on the chest after protecting the ball drop, but doing so often when sticking the dukes up would be required at AFLW level. It hasn't so much impacted her at junior level, but again, will be a way she can further improve.

As a whole, Wilkinson has a couple of key weapons - her hands and contested gamestyle - while having a wide array of positive traits. While not necessarily elite in her other traits, she seems to be either good, or very good across most elements, and even her improvements are at worst average, which is a good sign for having a high floor. With further development, Wilkinson will only get better, and she has what it takes to make that jump to the next level.

DRAFT RANGE: 40-60

SUMMARY:

Zoe Wilkinson is a draft prospect who has the ability to step up in class. She has a well-rounded game and there aren’t what you would call “red flags” in her profile. She has some key weapons, nice strengths, and plenty of areas to improve, but no genuine concerning issues that could hamper her should she get to the next level. If not this year, then certainly in the future, but she was really solid throughout 2025, particularly for the Ranges.
