2024 Coates Talent League Girls: Oakleigh vs. Western wrap

IN a make-up game for the Western Jets after their flight was cancelled to Tasmania a few weeks back, they faced off against Oakleigh Chargers at Warrawee on Saturday. In what will essentially be sorted into a Round 17 match – with both sides player other opponents next weekend, it was the Chargers who came away with yet another impressive win.

Oakleigh Chargers 11.13 (79) defeated Western Jets 2.1 (13)

An all-metropolitan clash with both sides missing quality players faced off on Saturday, as Oakleigh extended its unbeaten run over full-time Talent League Girls sides in the 2024 season. Not kicking a goal in the first term to actually trail by five points at quarter time, the Chargers quickly readjusted to kick 11 goals among 23 scoring shots in the last three quarters, keeping the Jets to just 1.1 in that time en route to a 66-point win.

STANDOUT: Chloe Bown (Oakleigh Chargers)

The star bottom-ager might have only played the one game for Vic Metro, but showed signs there as one to watch next year, and had another day out at Warrawee Park. She racked up 34 disposals, three marks, four tackles, eight inside 50s and kicked two goals in a huge effort, to be the main thorn in the side of the Western midfield and defence. Was everywhere on the day.

OTHERS:

Bown had a stack of contributors with wing Amy Cariss-Brett getting forward to kick two goals off 16 touches, with the lively Ebony Jago (two goals from 15 disposals) and Jacinta Baxter (23 disposals, one goal) also hitting the scoreboard. Midfielder Zoe Curry stepped up to the player, while defender Sophie McIntosh and bottom-ager Chloe Thorn were also very good. For Western Jets, Alex McBride-Loane was easily best-on for her side, rotating between defence and the ruck to finish with 27 disposals, five marks, three tackles, eight hitouts and five rebound 50s. Charlotte Miller also impressed running hard on the outside, while Indi Stanley and Sasha Nelson tried hard all game.
