Tigers roar to NTFL double chance

NIGHTCLIFF secured its top three spot with a dominant triple-digit demolition of Darwin Buffaloes last weekend, running out 106-point victors to ensure it will not drop below the NTFL Men’s Premier Division double chance threshold.

The Tigers won in impressive fashion, booting 18.16 (124) to 3.0 (18) at TIO Stadium against second last side, with Tiwi Bombers’ bye in the final round ensuring that only St Mary’s could leapfrog the Tigers. In saying that, with the other top four sides outside of Tiwi playing the bottom four sides, each of the finals-bound teams are predicted to win.

Desperate to win, Nightcliff raced out to a 29-point quarter time lead, and that only grew to 65 by the main break thanks to a five goals to nil second quarter. There was no containing the yellow and black as they booted a further four goals to one in both the third and fourth quarters to seal the comprehensive triple-digit shellacking.

Stanley Cox booted a game-high three goals, though the Tigers shared the load around with 12 individual goalkickers including multiple majors from Sean Hunter, Blake Launer, Kokwam Niki and Petros Politis. Ex-Cat Brandan Parfitt starred in the contest, while Jonathan Lanyon and Brendan Tanner were also named among the best.

Darwin skipper Jarrod Stokes tried his best in a tough loss, booting a goal alongside Will Irwin who kicked his team’s other two majors. The pair alongside Bradley Stokes and Nathan Spry worked hard, though ultimately fell well short of being competitive across four quarters.

The win was a crucial milestone game for skipper Brodie Filo who notched up his 150th NTFL Men’s Premier Division match. That celebration, along with locking in the double chance gave the Tigers plenty of reasons to celebrate.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Tiwi Bombers kept their faint hopes of a double chance alive with a hard-fought 11-point win over PINT at Marrara. With a bye in the last round, it looks unlikely given St Mary’s returns from a bye and will almost certainly leapfrog the Bombers. They enjoyed a strong final term to finish on a high however.

Meanwhile the other two games were complete bloodbaths with ladder leaders Southern Districts dismantling Wanderers by 131 points at Tracy Village Oval, while Waratah got an important tune up ahead of finals with the fifth placed side making light work of wooden spoon-bound Palmerston, 18.15 (123) to 7.4 (46).
