NORTHERN Knights midfielder Olivia Gorman is one of a number of AFLW Draft hopefuls within her side, as the region continues to develop plenty of prospects for the future in both AFLW and state leagues. Gorman is known for her ball-winning prowess and is averaging 22.0 disposals, 2.8 marks, 2.5 tackles and 1.8 inside 50s, while kicking three goals from her four matches.
We spoke to Gorman at the Coates Talent League Girls Preseason Testing event about her journey, idols and goals for the year ahead.
Q: Olivia, tell us a little bit about your footy journey?
OG: “Started off playing Auskick when I was about four. Then my brother introduced me to footy and I played Under 12s for pretty long time since I was about eight. Then got into Knights and this is my fourth year, so did double bottom-age and still going.”
Q: What role do you anticipate you’ll play this year?
OG: “Inside mid. We’ll do like a rotating forward, not too long, like four minutes rotation.”
Q: What do you see as some of the strengths in your game?
OG: “I’d definitely say my groundballs, clean hands and just like my footy IQ, knowing the best option.”
Q: What about some of the improvements you’re looking to make?
OG: “Definitely defensive pressure, being more physical because that’s when I play at my best.”
Q: Which AFL/W club do you support?
OG: “Hawthorn.”
Q: Is there a reason for that?
OG: “Just family, always gone for them.”
Q: Is there a player you look up to or model your game on?
OG: “Definitely Monique Conti, a gun midfielder.”
Q: Who’s had the most individual influence on your career?
OG: “I’d say my mum and my brother as well. My brother was more got me into footy but then my mum has been the one to drive me everywhere.”
Q: Finally, what goals do you set for yourself this year?
OG: “Having fun, last season of Knights. Just to keep improving and then hopefully make AFLW.”
