Consistency key in Suns’ season finale

GOLD Coast AFL Women’s coach Rhyce Shaw has no intentions of “throwing the magnets around” in a bid to snatch four points off the 16th placed Tigers in the last round of the AFLW season. The Suns have just one win to their name to-date and are coming up against the two-win Tigers, but Shaw said it would be more critical to remain consistent in what they are doing for the long-term.

“I think its really important that we stay consistent,” he said. “You can do that but its also can be fraught with danger. Just try and stay as consistent as we possibly can. “Put people in positions to succeed which we’ve tried to do all year, and I think that’s probably how we’re going to approach it and I wouldn’t see it changing too often.”

The Suns have had a “tough year” not just on the results front, but with injuries to key players at different points in the season. Shaw said the most recent loss to then-17th placed Collingwood was a microcosm of the season with players – such as Ella Smith with two goals – popping up for moments to support a handful of consistent players, but not enough contribution across the entire ground.

“She (Smith) played pretty well, I thought she took a couple of moments and put her head over the ball a couple of times which was really good,” Shaw said. “I think that’s probably the theme of our year that we’ve got a few popping up here and there, we’ve got our consistent ones like Lucy (Single), Niamh (McLaughlin) and Charlie (Rowbottom).

“I think Darcie Davies can put her hand up, she did a really good job I think she rucked the whole second half because Greggy (Tayla Gregory) went down. “We’ve got that, we know we’ve got it, it’s just how do we all put it together at once, we haven’t been able to follow that recipe yet.

“That’s probably whats let us down, that we haven’t had everybody on board at the same time for the whole game and you need that to give yourself a chance to win a game let alone win the game. “Again we found it hard to find consistency across the board in our team and winning those moments, and I think Collingwood did a great job in that last quarter.”

Shaw admitted the club had gone through a “pretty tough week” due to the mounting losses, and while he felt the team “executed for long periods of time”, the Suns’ inability to score was a massive issue for the club.

The Suns have a stack of top-end draft prospects that will enter the club through the December 15 draft. Shaw was asked whether the club would look to recruit more athletically gifted players, after he conceded his players either “got caught watching” or “in between” which invited pressure and turnovers in the Round 11 match, to which he said everything would be investigated.

“We’re going to have a good look at the whole program and what that looks like,” Shaw said. “It’s obviously been a tough year for us and we’ve got a lot of decisions to make but we’ll worry about that at the end of the year.”
