EASTERN Ranges secured a 19-point victory over the Sandringham Dragons in Round 11 of the Talent League Girls, running out 6.13 (49) to 4.6 (30) winners. While the Ranges were impressive across the board, it was the relentless accumulation and driving play of bottom-ager Alira Barnard-Rossely that stood out above all else.

The dynamic 167cm forward-turned-midfielder for the match, finished with a game-high 37 disposals, two marks, three tackles, five clearances, five inside 50s, and two rebound 50s in a performance that underlined her status as one of the most prolific ball-winners in the competition.

BACKGROUND

Alira Barnard-Rossely
Height: 167cm
DOB: 05/10/2009
Position: Forward/Midfielder

A bottom-ager in the 2026 Talent League Girls competition, Alira Barnard-Rossely has bided her time as a forward given the strength of Eastern’s midfield, but with a host of starting onballers out due to Vic Metro duties, the talented Under 16s rep from last year stepped up to the plate. Known for her clean hands, quick handball release, and ability to burst away from stoppages, Barnard-Rossely is a player who finds the ball in heavy traffic and consistently drives it forward.

Her Round 11 performance against Sandringham was a testament to her endurance and desire to be involved, starting on-ball and remaining a key figure through all four quarters. With 37 disposals as a bottom-ager in a Talent League Girls match, she is firmly on the radar of AFLW recruiters.

PLAYER FOCUS

Stats vs. Sandringham Dragons, Round 11: 37 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s.

QUARTER ONE

Starting on-ball, Barnard-Rossely was immediately involved. She made a clean gather on the wing inside the opening two minutes, getting hands off effectively under pressure to keep the ball moving. Her desire to win the ball and release it quickly was evident from the outset, standing up in a tackle to get it away, winning it again, and then getting a second handball away before her kick was smothered at half-back.

Her clean hands at half-back were a highlight, executing a lovely quick release to Lara Williams. She showed her burst speed by taking the ball on the wing at speed and thumping it forward, which led to a shot on goal and signalled that Eastern were dangerous early between the arcs.

While she did have a moment where the ball slipped through her hands at half-back, she quickly recovered, winning two more handballs – the second a good one to the running Williams – before coming off briefly to remove her long sleeves. On her return, she immediately laid a tackle and got a handball away. She closed out the quarter by breaking away from half-back and thumping the ball to space, which worked out well down the ground.

QUARTER TWO

Remaining on-ball, Barnard-Rossely continued to find the ball early with a handball away to a teammate. Her burst at half-forward was a feature, winning the ball off the deck cleanly after an initial handball went to a teammate under pressure.

Her tendency to always look for the quick handball release – even when it was not strictly necessary – was a pattern that emerged through the term, though her clean pickup off the deck and her willingness to go in hard with quick hands under pressure inside 50 were genuine highlights. It was also impressive with her contest-to-contest work to win the ball back for her side.

QUARTER THREE

Starting on-ball, Barnard-Rossely made an immediate impact. A quick kick off a handball receive going forward led to a goal in the opening minute to Kodie Daniels, demonstrating her ability to make decisive, fast decisions out of the middle. She then burst out of the middle and pushed forward effectively.

While she won a number of touches inside 50, though there were moments where she could not get the ball off cleanly, looking for the handball to a teammate just half a metre away rather than backing herself to execute. Her kick across half-back was not pinpoint but worked out, and she continued to accumulate, receiving a handball and kicking forward before being intercepted.

QUARTER FOUR

Barnard-Rossely started on-ball in the final quarter and was clean with her first touch, picking up the ball and handing away nicely to Williams to kick inside 50. She did have a blemish when she thumped it on the boot and went out on the full – a rushed kick that needed more composure – but she responded well.

She thumped a kick from the wing into the corridor effectively, and after being intercepted at half-forward twice, showed her persistence by kicking inside 50 to a one-on-one and then deep to the pocket to work out. She closed the game with a nice kick from half-back into the middle, a fitting end to a high-volume afternoon.

CONCLUSION

Alira Barnard-Rossely’s 37-disposal performance against Sandringham in Round 11 was a commanding display of endurance, clean ball use, and driving midfield play. As a bottom-ager, her ability to accumulate at such a high level and consistently drive the ball inside 50 marks her as a genuine AFLW draft prospect to watch.

With her clean hands, burst speed, and elite work rate already well established, the next step in her development is ironing out her composure under pressure. If she can do that, Barnard-Rossely has the makings of a highly damaging midfielder at the next level.
