Number Crunching: VFLW – Round 9
WE ARE over halfway through of the Victorian Football League (VFL) Women’s Competition and as round nine has drawn to a close, we look into the stat that defines the game- kicking. Whether it be a keen defender who can get the ball far out of trouble, a midfielder who knows how to get the ball straight into the hands of their players in the box, or a forward who always kicks on target. It’s time we look into those players who have shown excellent hussle throughout the weekend and season.
Round nine predictively saw ladder leaders, Collingwood have several of its players in the top 10 once again, with midfielder Jaimee Lambert topping the list with 23 kicks. Lambert, whose impact sometimes goes unnoticed, proved clearly in the game against Darebin with 65 per cent kicking efficiency, that she is a player to watch in this competition. Familiar Collingwood golden child, Chloe Molloy was also featured on the list, with the AFLW Rising Star once again leading her team to victory. Darebin’s Elise O’Dea also had a strong performance with 55 per cent kicking efficiency despite having to play against a powerful Collingwood side. Another notable player include Casey’s Madelaine Shevlin, whose 63 per cent kicking efficiency help led her team to the win over the Saints.
As for most kicks throughout the entire season, once again Jess Duffin features on the list like she does in goals scored and handballs, yet this time leading with 147 kicks. Regardless of Williamstown’s ladder position, it would be unfair not to once again acknowledge Duffin’s ability perform week in and week out. NT captain, Angela Foley is also playing a key role for her team with 123 kicks in seven games. NT’s debut season in the VFLW has gone as well especially thanks to Foley’s leadership. Ashleigh Riddell’s continued ability to stand out is also felt within the Mugars and the entire league, despite missing round nine, with 102 kicks in seven games.
