Weekend preview: NTFL Women’s – Round 2
THE reigning premiers return to the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) Women’s competition, after having a bye in Round 1. The Warriors will face the Southern Districts while in other games, Wanderers will take on Pint, Nightcliff goes head-to-head against Palmerston and Tracy Village does battle against Darwin.
WARATAH V SOUTHERN DISTRICTS
Round 2- Saturday October 13, 10.30am
TIO Stadium
Waratah will play its first game of the season against Southern Districts on Saturday. The Crocs escaped with a narrow win against Darwin last round, with Lateesha Jeffrey, Tahlia Holtze and Tayla Thorn leading the way. The reigning premiers will make it hard for the Southern Districts to make it two from two, as 2017/18 Waratah leading goal kicker, Sue Nalder could face her NT Thunder teammates. Madeline Gault could also have a big impact on the game if she plays, as she can also get among the goals. Holtze will need to kick a couple of majors to combat the Warriors’ hunger to defend their title.
WANDERERS V PINT
Round 2- Saturday October 13, 6pm
TIO Oval No. 2
Pint comes into this game with the momentum, having secured a thrilling three-point win against Palmerston in Round 1. Wanderers, on the other hand, are coming off a loss to open their 2018/19 campaign, and will be hungry to get back on the winner’s list. Kristen Smits led the way in goals for the Queen Ants last round and will be keen to kick another few majors to make it two from two for Pint. Erin Hetherington will also be looking to put in another big game for her side. Keyona De Satge will be key for the Wanderers, with last year’s leading goal kicker getting on the board again in Round 1.
NIGHTCLIFF V PALMERSTON MAGPIES
Round 2- Sunday October 14, 10am
PSC BM Oval
Nightcliff and Palmerston are both coming off Round 1 losses, but on the opposite ends of the spectrum. The Tigers suffered a big loss against St Mary’s while the Magpies fell three points short of Pint. Nevertheless, both sides will be eager to get their season back on track as PSC BM Oval. Sophie Hatzismalis will need to put in another big game for the Tigers if they are to snag a Round 2 win. Hannah Turnbull, Emma-Lou Wolsey and Tayla Dando would also want to back up their impressive Round 1 performances. But they’ll have to come up against Northern Territory’s AFL Women’s Under 18 Most Valuable Player (MVP), Janet Baird. Baird had a great start for the Magpies last round and is unlikely to drop off in form. Karlee King will also be a key player for the Magpies as they aim to secure their first win in the 2018/19 season.
TRACY VILLAGE V DARWIN BUFFETTES
Round 2- Sunday October 14, 12pm
Tracy Village
Tracy Village comes into this game off a comfortable win against the Wanderers. The Buffettes on the other hand, will be hungry to bounce back from their close loss against Southern Districts. NT Thunder duo, Machaelia Roberts and Kylie Duggan will again be key for Darwin, with Roberts putting in a best-on-ground performance in Round 1 and Duggan kicking a goal. For the Razorbacks, expect another big game from Debra Bree Bonde while NT Thunder’s Kristy Irvine could again get on the board with some handy majors to secure a victory.
